I can see where that would work for music that already exists on my computer. Can I use that method to extract files from my brother in law's iPod?

You should be able to. The iPod is essentially an external hard drive. This was a saving grace for me when my old computer died and I hadn't backed up my library in any way. Thankfully my library did not exceed my 20 GB iPod.

The one thing that wasn't mentioned that I would recommend, is to change the settings in iTunes on the computer you are loading the music onto from auto-sync to manual transfer. This way when you hook up the iPod to the computer it won't automatically open iTunes. When you hook it up it will just appear as an external drive.

We have a Video iPod from a relative that passed away. It's got about a thousand songs on it. We can use it with a SoundDock, but we can't use it with our iTunes. It won't transfer from the iPod to iTunes. Is there anyway we can save these songs to our computer?

if the content on the ipod is in m4a format, unless you have his login you will never be able to use those songs. all the songs have to be in an unprotected format such as mp3 or aac. when you get to pull the songs off the ipod they are going to be in folders listed as FRPT DSJH WIRN etc... you dont have to reorganize the songs. (this is going to get long)....In itunes properties there is an option of "create and manage folders by artist" or something to that effect. If you select that and then add some folders to your itunes, it will automatically take the folders you added, rename them all, and organize them in your itunes music folder. that way you dont have to worry about the weird coded filenames.

Technically you could just "add folder" from the file menu in itunes, and select the music folder on the ipod and it will automatically copy and rename all the music for you.

so as a wrap up:

plug your ipod in and besure you can view hidden folders (as listed above in GermanDude's post)

open itunes
ensure that the "organize my music files" option is selected in properties.
click "file>add folder to library"
browse to your ipod>music and add the entire folder
It will then add the songs to you library and copy them to your music folder.

If the file is protected, it will still copy and load it into itunes, but when you try to play it, it will ask for a password and login. that is another issue that can be solved with other software. another quick way to find out if its protected or not is to right click on your main music library at the top, and add the column named "kind". this will list the type of file it is whether its MP3, AAC, or AAC Protected.

So far, I downloaded EphPod (fairly quick even on dial-up.) and managed to pull all the iPod music off my computer and put it on the bastard iPod. Now I have to figure out how to pull the stuff off the iPod and put it on my computer. Thanks to all for the advice!

funny when i go to my ipod there is no tools

the Tools menu is not "on" the iPod. It is one of the menus in the Window Explorer window.

Double click "My Computer" the window that pops open is Windows Explorer. The Tools menu is at the top of that window. click on Tools > Options when the Folder Options dialog box opens then click on teh View tab. Make sure you have Show hidden files and folders selected and also uncheck Hide extensions of know file types Click OK. This will allow you to see hidden folders on your computer. follow the rest of the steps listed in the earlier post to get to the music.
