Question about Neodymium drivers

Looks like that cab weighs around 60 pounds. Neo drivers might save you 10 pounds at the very most.

I’d plan to shop for a new cab.
yeah, you may be right....I've been looking for something in Baltic Birch plywood which is pretty light. When Carvin was in the amp business they made bass cabs from that stuff and they were pretty light. i remember borrowing one once and i was amazed how light it was. I put my sales guy at Sweetwater to work to see what he could come up with.

There are a few Carvin 2x10s in there, too.

(True) Baltic Birch is not a light wood, it's quite heavy (and expensive). We moved to Italian Poplar which is much lighter, very strong but also expensive.

It's the combination of lighter materials, lighter assembly methods (including bracing) and lighter drivers that makes lighter speakers.

Thanks, this is good information for me to think on...

I've played through a bunch of neodymium speaker loaded cabs but I keep coming back to the Bag End S15 with that big ol' ceramic magnet. Does this mean I like ceramic magnets better? No, it means I like those Bag End cabs. Maybe more importantly I'm comfortable with them. (And my next two favourite cabs are both neos.)

So my questions are:
"Only Neo cabs can be light" Is there such a law?
What are the tonal drawback of Neo cabs?

Neodmium magnets are far and away the lightest material for driver construction. As a eneral rule, if it’s light, it’s Nd.

There are no tonal drawbacks whatsoever to Nd, or any other type of magnets. The material from which a magnet is made cannot in any way affect the sound of a driver, given equal magnetic field strength.

What are the tonal drawback of Neo cabs?
Absolutely none!
I own 2 ND cabs (gene Benz 212 neoX and fender bass man 810), class D amp (Ampeg svt 7 pro), and class AB tube amp Sadowsky sa200 and a non ND 810 ashdown cab.
There are absolutely no drawback in tone whatever the technology.
I bought the Ashdown because it was a steal. But I don't see any reason why not going for ND or class d Amps. Unless you don't have the choice and willing to play tube amps. Which can be only class AB
