I must live under a rock. I've been playing bass since 1990 and have never seen or heard of these things until recently. Now it seems like every bassist I see has one of these on their instrument. Is this a fad or something that will be around forever?

Considering that this thread is from 2008, it would seem logical to say they've gone past the "fad" stage at this point.
