Question about Phil Jones Double Four

Hi everyone,

I am in the market for a practice amp, so I considered getting myself a double four, mostly I am attracted to the size and portability, but I also have an interrogation about this little amp, and seeing as TalkBass is quite fond of PJ amps, I thought to ask here :).

Basically, this amp would rest on my desk (outside of an occasional bedroom jam with friends), where I would use it to practice Bass plugged to my computer with a jack input to play along to tracks. This leads me to my question, how good is the sound of this amp used as a monitor basically? I previously had a Boss Katana for bass with 2x10' drivers and a tweeter, and when the tweeter was engaged, the sound quality of tracks was simply excellent, to the point where I ditched my speakers to play everything from my amp when playing along to music. Unfortunately, I had to return the amp, but that is another story.

Seeing as the PJ amps have small drivers, it would make sense to me that they would be able to reproduce high frequencies, and as such, would be great little speakers for music on their own.

So could someone with a PJ amp let me know if that is the case? That would truly be a selling point for me.

Thanks in advance.

All the yakky-yakky talk-talk is fine, but this vid will answer your question better.

My doubles as my wife's Kitchen radio with the addition of a little cheap amazon FM tuner plugged into the aux in.

Thanks for your answer!

I had seen that video and it sure is convincing, but this isn't a whole mix with a vocalist and the sound quality of the recording isn't particularly amazing (plus it can be far from reality) which is why I wanted to ask some opinions from here.

But yeah basically I am wondering if this amp would be serviceable as an extra speaker :)

Would the Double Four be loud enough for a bass guitar / acoustic grand piano duo? I have been using a Markbass Micromark 801 which is adequate, but ideally I'd like something lighter as I have a long commute for these gigs. Yes, I know the Micromark is very light, but it still gets heavy when you're walking a distance. The DF would be ideal if its loud enough, (the piano is unamplified). TIA.
