Double Bass Question about repertoire list

Hello, I am looking at an audition . They ask for Beethoven Mvt 4-Recitatives. What does Recitatives mean, what is the panel looking for? Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks for the help.

The passages are so well known that you need to study them along with listening to recordings for style. You need to understand the context, the broader musical setting, and something about recitative style. The intervening orchestral passages help you understand how to make each statement differently and how to use rubato.

So that when you play these passages strongly in style for your audition the panel can imagine the orchestral accompaniment too. Beethoven should sound like Beethoven, Mozart should sound like Mozart, etc, etc.

Good luck for the audition.
