Question: Ampeg + Sansamp Users

I've got a '75 SVT and routinely use my SansAmp BDDI. I love the sound of my amp and am not using the pedal for tone enhancement or warming up (which the amp on its own really does not need), but instead use it to get different tones, as a volume boost, to drive the amp a little more and (most importantly for me) as an amp simulator when I only get a DI to the house PA (if the sound guy won't mic my cabinet) when using effects- especially distortion/fuzz and evelope filtering.

In the last case, I will usually run my effects into the SansAmp and send its parallel output (without tube emulation) into my head and the direct out (XLR- affected) to the house. Sound guys are usually much happier, and I get better tone reports when I do this, as opposed to just running an overdriven signal directly into a DI.

A large part of the SansAmps raison d' etre is to model tube amps ala the SVT, but I haven't found it redundant at all, and have been able to put many of the other features to good use.

My setup is:
BASS -> PEDALBOARD -> Sansamp PSA-1 -> AMPEG V4BH

The Sansamp is killer!! I usually use the YES preset with high and low knobs at the center (0db), otherwise it's eq "swallows" AMPEG's eq preset. This setting has THE drive! It adds monstrous amount of MEAT to the already big bottomed punchy AMPEG sound. :bassist:

Yeah, agree with the above.

Contrary to the popular opinion around here on Talkbass, the Sansamp is not a one trick pony. It is capable of dialing up a wide range of tones, much more than just impersonating a mic'd up Ampeg rig. It is certainly not redundant.

I'd say go for it!

I use an Ampeg V4BH for my bar gigs and I actually didn't like the Sansamp. It wasn't so much because I found it redundant, more because I don't like it's EQ and attack. It sounds unnatural to me made my playing much less dynamic, which one attack sound that sounds like "doonk doonk doonk". Not pleasant to my ears at all. I recommend you try it because a lot of people like it, it just wasn't the sound I was going for at all.

I wouldn't run the wet output of my Sansamp into my SVT-4, but I do use it with a small practice combo amp for smaller gigs. With a good ampeg rig you dont need a the Sansamp IMHO, except if your looking for overdrive or something like that..otherwise, your tone should be good enough from an Ampeg CL or SVT for that matter..
