Double Bass Question for all the (ex-)Pub280 owners

I was looking at the Pub280 and I noticed it has no clip indicator. Let's say you want to use a dyn-b or an AMT mic with the Pub, how do you know the input singal is high enough or too high?

Because it needs a preamp. The pub is just a power amp + speaker. So, if you don't use a preamp, your input signal will never be too high (because it would be hardly audible, if at all).

Yes, but how do you know if the signal coming from your pre-amp is too weak/high?

I think (I do not own a pub myself, but I have owned several power amps) that the control knob is just an attenuator, and not an actual gain control. The setting of this controller is thus not as critical as would be the case in a preamp. It is very unlikely that you would send too high a signal to the power amp, and if you do, you would hear it. Setting a power amp level is far more a question of using your ears than looking at a led indicator. If you don't hear distortion, you have set the level correctly. And too low a level is not a problem, either, since a power amp section adds a lot less noise that a preamp section would.
