Question For BBE MaxCom Owners

Someone will probably pop by your thread and give you grief for not searching for the answer. I tried, but didn't find much of great value.

Best I can tell from what I read, the use of both compressors in the Maxcom should allow a nice config. I plan on getting one of these, too. The first configuration I will try will be for the first compressor to be the first thing in my chain. I will set ot for something in the 2-4:1 range for compression and a medium threshhold. Out of that, I will go to an effect or two and then the preamp. Out of the preamp, I'll go through the second compressor and activate the maximizer as well. This one will be set for 6-8:1 and a higher thresshold to lop the tops off of any transients.

I've got one but I really don't use the compression much, and as much as I thought I would. The manual has recommended settings to get you started and I pretty much stuck close to their recommendation. I use the sonic maximizer portion of it more. All in all, it's a pretty nice unit.

I run both channels in series, 1 to 2...and I do use both Sonic Maximizers as well. I shut the gate right off...

and it goes last in the effects loop, right before the power amp...I don't run floor effects into it, instrument level effects go before the amp input, line level rack effects go ahead of the MaxCom.

This unit was designed for line-level input and output, so it belongs in the loop (or between preamp and power amp). I currently just use one channel for a mono bass signal, but I am considering getting one of those little Rolls crossovers for two-band compression. As far as the settings, they vary depending on which bass I'm using, and how aggressive I feel like playing. I set the release fairly short. I use the meters to gauge whether I'm in the ballpark- I only want it to compress the strongest peaks. I use a moderate amount of the enhancers, and I leave the gate switched off.

Harpo e-mailed me about my settings, but my return e-mails to him bounced, so I figured I'd post them here. These settings basically mimic the more "famous" compression settings that have been repeatedly posted on TB over the years.

Both channels are on and the link is set to off. The settings for each channel are as follows:

Channel 1:
Gate Threshold = off
Channel = on
Threshold = -10
Ratio = 4 (or just under 5, technically)
Attack = 10
Auto = off
Release = .2
Output - 1
Sonic Max = off

Channel 2:
Gate Threshold = off
Channel = on
Threshold = 0
Ratio = 7
Attack = .1
Auto = off
Release = .5
Output - 7
Sonic Max = on (Low = 5; Process = 7)

Oh, and I run mine through the effects loop on my Eden Navigator.

Interesting...I run the Sonic max on both channels, channel one at 6 oclock (lo and process) and channel two at 4 (lo) and 6 (process)...

I've been noticing lately that my mids *seem* scooped with the sonic max on (see my settings above) and I'm having a harder time cutting through the mix. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a setting for the sonic max on the maxcom that you would recommend other than the one I have in order to remedy this problem? I hate scooped mids, personally.

Somebody else here recently described the BBE process scooping the mids. I only used low enhancer settings (4 lo, 2 process) on the MaxCom I had, so it probably wasn't enough to cause noticeable mid scoop. Seems like they should develop a "mids enhancer" just for bassists! The only DIY solutions I can think of involve a 3-way crossover or sidechaining a BBE off an EQ unit with mids boosted, but I don't actually know if it would be worth the trouble. For me, I like the BBE process for complete recorded mixdowns, but not so much for individual instruments.

Could you go into a little bit of detail about your setup, and how you use both channels? I mean you only have one input to go into the compressor from your bass, right, how do you utilize both channels?

Also the effects loop into your head... does that mix the compression with a clean signal, or replace it, or what? I guess I'm confused on what an effects loop actually does and why you wouldn't just plug the compressor output into the input of your amp.

Most (not all) rackmount comps need a line-level input signal, so they have to be after a preamp, not before it. One way to do that is through the fx loop, which is an output of the signal right after the preamp. Some fx loops can blend the clean and effected signals, some can't, and you'd need to determine which you have in your amp.

Re: Your output levels...are they -1 and -7 respectively??? Or are they +1 and +7...

and yes, I'm noticing a mid scoop when I play with a more "rock" oriented EQ setting with my main band....and I've recently stopped using the Maximizer on the first channel, so now the sound's a bit "sweeter"... as bongomania posted, perhaps less agressive settings are needed for individual instruments...

I run from my effects send jack to the input and output of my dbx 120a,from that output to channel one on the MaxCom, to the output of channel one to the input of channel two, and then from the output of channel two to the return jack on my amp (BassMaster XS800H). I use balanced/TRS cables all the way through.

I run the effects send into the input of channel 1 of the MaxCom, then run the output from channel 1 into the input of channel 2. I then run the output from channel 2 into effects return on the preamp.

I've just always run my compressors in my effects loop.

RevGroove: They are set to +1 and +7.

...IME, pedals are best run in front of the pre (before the amp input), and rack/line level effects are best run post pre (in the effects loop).

I know one thing that DOSNT work, and thats. runing one channel in front of the amp, and one channel in the loop. Seemed like it was working for awhile and then the channel that was in front of the amp started going hay wire. I thought it was broke. I unpluged the front of the amp, and switched over the loop, to that channel (to check it), and its working fine now.

I wonder if I can use one channel in the loop and one channel between pre amp and power amp ? I think you can even go between power amp and speaker
