Question for Markbass LM2 owners

It mostly depends on the bass, imo. If you have a Warwick Corvette or a Musicman, it'll purr like a tiger. With my 2005 Jazz Bass with standard modern Fender pickups, there isn't really much growl.

Yep

The LMII is a smooth operator with my Jazz, but gets as mean as I want it to with my G&L L2.5K.

You'll notice that the LMII is one of those amps that lets you really hear your bass rather than a lot of coloration from the amp, ergo, if the bass doth growl, the LMII will howl.

I get mine to growl a little bit by putting an MXR M80 in front of it and digging in on my bass a little harder. I also use pretty hot pick-ups on most of my basses so that helps too. Jimmy Rocket is right about the fact that the LMII lets you really hear your bass rather than a lot of coloration from the amp.

Then again, why would you want an amp that does nothing other than amplify the singal? You can use a 50 dollars DI and sent it straight to PA for that

 Maybe a $200 DI, and IMO that's the dream tone right there for at least some of us. I've yet to hear a cheap DI that doesn't compress the heck out of a bass signal. However, you are correct in general, that if you dig a pure signal like your bass through a high quality DI (e.g., a Radial JDI) into a front of house system, the LMII is GREAT. If you like a lot of color, etc. from your bass rig, probably not.

I don't view either as superior, but I agree they are a different approach.

To the OP.. .the Nemesis heads are, IMO, the best sounding heads in the Eden line-up... warm, fat, punchy, and very little 'wool' to cloud up the tone. Unless the weight bothers you, I'd stick with what you have.

took the plunge today and bought the LMII Ltd Ed...now i just need some cabs and i was thinking about an avatar just like the OP...any thoughts...

I've never played them but everyone raves about Avatar cabs. I was ready to give them a shot, but decided on two Aguilar GS112s instead. They're a little more expensive than the Avatars, but they sound great. Very articulate, but with plenty of bass response. Oh, and they're freakin' loud. Either way, I'd buy 2 8 ohm 112 cabs so that you can take advantage of the full 4 ohm load while maintaining the versatility of a small setup when you need it.

I agree and then I don't. A week before I got my Markbass stuff, I bought an older Nemmy combo for light duty. I thought the sound was really good and very usable. I've never liked Eden, but I do like Nemmy. Then I tried the Mini CMD121P combo and immediately bought it and flipped the Nemmy because I felt it was a lot better and lot closer to my tonal goals. That isn't to say the Nemmy wasn't good, and it's not to say the poster should flip his Nemmy to get an LMII. But I did ;)

+1.. I was strictly speaking of the heads, not the combo's. While I like the Nemesis combo's also, similar to the Markbass, I'm more impressed with the heads than the speakers/cabs.

any reason for 2 112's instead of 2 210's?

I used to have a 115 / 210 setup, because I was coming from a 410 setup and I wanted the response of the 10's with the depth of the 15. As it turns out 12's give me both, and the GS112s do it exceptionally well. I would definitely play 2 210s together, but I've never been a fan of a single 210 by itself. I am, however, happy with the sound of a single 12" when my back gets the better of me and I just want to carry one cabinet. :)

well here's the deal. i have the nemesis head but no carrying case for it. $150ish for mooradian case, so that makes $320 that i paid for the nemmy plus $150 for the case = $480
the LM2 I can throw in my messenger bag. LM2 is $580 at local shop so is the weight, tone, and extra wattage worth $100??
