Question on Extension cabs

I searched the stickies and FAQs but couldn't find an answer, so...

If I run my SVT into my 4 ohm 8x10 cab, and run a speaker cable from the 8x10 to another 4 ohm cab, does the load total 4 ohms or 2 ohms? I imagine that it would be treated like one big bass cab, but I'd rather ask than mess up my power tubes.

2 ohms, which is fine with an all-tube SVT.

Got to question why you're going to do that, though. You're going to split the wattages unevenly and the 810 is going to be a lot louder than the 410. I would just throw it all into the 810.

You are talking about the 300 watt all-tube SVT's, right? I ask because many people refer to the "pro series" as SVT's as well, which they aren't, and some don't go below 4 ohms.

+1. More specifically, given that each of those cabinet has the same ohm rating, each of them would get the same amount of current from the amp. So, the 4 speakers in the 410 would get the same wattage as all 8 in the 810.

I agree with Jimmy, it's hard to imagine how you would need to move more air than an 810 would move, but that's not what you asked about, so never mind.

Now, if you pair an 8-ohm 410 with your 810, your total ohm rating would be 2.67, and in that configuration, the 410 would get 1/3 of the total wattage, and the 810 would get 2/3. So, each speaker in your 410 would receive the same wattage as each speaker in your 810. That would be a better way to go, if you really do want 12 10" speakers in your rig.

Hah I was just curious. I don't plan on ever using both of my cabs, but in the event that I had the opportunity to play an arena without PA support, I wanted to be prepared. Thanks guys.

I probably would, assuming that 2 12s usually take about the same power as 4 10s.
