I have a question for the jazz bass crowd.
I recently picked up a new Fender FSR MIM Jazz. I LOVE the construction quality, fit, finish, and weight and tone. The one nit I have is that the output is a little anemic. It requires about 1/4 turn on the amps gain knob (to about 12 o'clock) to be equal to what I'm used to. I realize that the MM StingRay HH and the Geddy with DM Model Js and an Audere pre are going to be a little hotter set flat, but I still feel it's lacking ooomph. I did verify the pickup height as being correct. I'm playing in a dance/classic rock cover group through a GK MB115 combo or SVT3Pro through a 410HLF.
If I were to replace them, I know from past experience with an MIM V that the pickups are the same size on the MIM and not so on most aftermarket pickup sets. The bridge pu being slightly bigger.
At first glance, it seems that I could just get 2 neck pickups and they would fit okay. The question is, aren't the neck and bridge pickups wound opposite to cancel out each other? Would putting 2 neck pickups in eliminate this cancelling action and cause hum?
If so, I guess I'm left with the propect of using a Dremel to slightly enlarge the bridge pickup slot or remembering to crank the gain every time I use this bass.
Any recommendations?
