okok this has probably been covered before but no harm asking again right? newbie question but can all guitar pedals be used for bass? or rather what defines a guitar pedal that cannot be used for bass? thanks.

Using guitar pedals with a bass will cause a feedback loop which will blow out your pickups and leave you with a loud buzzing sound that sounds very similar to "do a search"!

Can you use guitar pedals with a bass? Sure. Will it do any harm? Not at all.

However, with many guitar pedals you will lose some of the lower frequencies from your signal, as guitar pedals are optimized for guitar and not for the lower range of the bass.
