Questions on the SVT-7 Pro

It is not just the used single mic and its frequency response. Your cab does not sound the same for your ears as when mic records it in 10cm. Miked cab can sound similar only when used multiple different type mics but noisy stage doesn't allow that. That's why good compromise in live is using e.g. SM57 (flat) or Beta 52 (scooped) and mixing it with DI sound.

In studio you only need clean DI and your favorite preamp sound, rest can be done afterwards (reamping, cab sim, plugins etc).

Edit: Edited a lot.

I'm alright with that. I just need the fuzz not to sound dreaful! So I think that can be achieved with a mic. I'm not sure that our desk can realistically take an extra signal to allow me to mix in the DI, but I'll have a look.

Studio, I'm not so worried. I will test it at home with a cab sim.

Definitely mic + cab will cut the high end. If you have access to multiple mics, try them because there is huge variation in sound. Beta 52 is common in bass drum miking and widely available, and it is very different sounding compared to 57.

There's quite a price difference between the 52 and the 57. And people don't really seem to be selling the 57 second hand.

I met a guy at a brewery a few years ago who had invented this product: INTEGRAL Close Miking | By SAMSystems. It's pretty cool. I wonder if it would be any good.

I just listened to a recording on the bass channel on youtube of the SM57 vs. Beta 52a vs. an expensive condensor mic and they all sounded the same to me. I think they're likely to only make a marginal difference, so I'm going to try the 57 and see how I go. I think it'll be absolutely fine for live given how messy that situation is, and then for recording, which I don't do very often, I'll probably DI and use a cab sim.

I'm going to try running out of my compressor into the FX loop of the amp, and then using the FX Mix to see how that sounds. Though all my (two) fx pedals do have a clean/dry mix on them.

That Integral mic deal is rather nifty, but only allows one position and sound. Using different mics and positions is a big part of the final sound. Which brings me to the other issue, I can't believe you didn't hear any real difference in those mics. What did you listen to them on?

Hah well I was only half paying attention listening at work, through headphones. I might have a better listen later.

Two quite exciting things have happened.

1. I'm picking up a Barefaced TWO 10 on Friday!

2. I had an EHX 12EX7EH lying around. I decided to change it with the tube that was in the amp, and it sounds great. I think it enables to overdrive it a lot further, should I wish to, than the tube that was in here - ECC 83S. Having said that, I don't know if I like how it's interacting with my preamp. But, I have both tubes available so I can have a fiddle and see what works best.

Also, I tried the passive circuit on my Sire V7 and it sounded awesome through this amp. I'm not sure how I feel about that...I think if I set all the active preamp knobs to noon I get a similar sound, and then I still have the ability to change the tone on the fly.

One thing I don't like is closing off functionality. So, if I can use the active circuit then I will do my best to. I had fun experimenting, though.

I've found an SM57 that I'm going to pick up for £50 over the weekend. Should be good :)
Be sure that it's a real Shure and not counterfeit. At £50 new, it's almost guaranteed to be counterfeit. Many are dreadful sounding if you know what you are listening for.

I ended up ordering an AKG Perception P2.

On another note, I much prefer the tube delivered in the amp. It's a ECC 83S. Never heard of it! But i'll look it up tomorrow to see what people say about it compared to the 12AX7. Definitely getting less tube distortion.

ECC-83 is the Euro name for the 12AX7, otherwise identical and often you will see both names on a tube. The S is most commonly associated with JJ, though there are a few other brandings that use the S suffix.
