Quick Bridge Adjustment Question

Is it recommended to remove tension from a string to adjust it's bridge saddle height?

Others may chime in to state the contrary, but I have never heard this to be necessary. I've never reduced the tension when adjusting my saddle height, and none of my basses have exploded yet.
