Quick EQ settings for Traynor YBA-200-2

I used the same setup that was provided for the backline at a local gig about 4 months ago and I immediatly set everything flat (12 o'clock) and adjusted the volume to suit for sound check. After Sound check, I ended up easing off the gain (11 o'clock) and adding a little trebel (1 o'clock) with the bright switch already switched in. I had a nice sound coming out of it from flat, so why mess with it.

Actually, you were running everything cut. The Traynor YBA-200 has a passive EQ, meaning cut only. So maxed, Treble, Mid, and Bass are flat.

I run my Treble at about 1-2 o'clock (no bright switch), Mids maxed, bass maxed, Range and Resonance both at about 11 o'clock, and scoop OFF. Just a starting point.

The most intuitive controls are the resonance and range. Range is an EQ adjustment, cutting it back adds more bass and low mids, while boosting it adds more high mids and cuts the really low freq's. Resonance is a control that a lot of tube amps use to compensate for a certain squishy character tubes have (I'm quite sure it can be explained better, but I do what I can in layman's terms). The further back you roll this control the tighter the tone gets, while the further you boost it the bigger and more pillowy and bassy it gets. So knowing that, go forth and experiment.

5. 3-Band Equalization and Range Control
The YBA200 features a vintage passive tone stack consisting of traditional Treble, Bass and Mid Controls. Additionally, the tone stack is equipped with a Range control; this adjusts the frequency range for the Treble, Bass and Mid controls.

Tech Note: The YBA200 has been fitted with a traditional passive tone stack. This allows the tubes to generate natural sounding harmonics when driven into saturation. Active tone controls can generate unwanted harmonics when clipping interrupts the feedback loop in the amplifier. Passive tone controls are always subtractive, which means they can only reduce the gain in their specific frequency ranges. Active tone controls, on the other-hand, are wrapped around an amplifier and will provide gain boost when the controls are turned past the middle position.
 
I use a YBA200-2 through an Ampeg SVT 4x10 HLF. I run it with treble at around 2 O'clock, mids up all the way, range at about 9-10 O'clock, Bass around 3 O'clock, resonance all the way counter clockwise, scoop off. No treble boost. Great rock/pop sound! Love my Traynor!

This is the same setup I use, except mine isn't the -2, mine's the original. I used to use it with a Sansamp, but I find I really prefer the standard tone of the amp, rather than the colored tone of the Sansamp.

So, Ben, would it be correct to say that the only changes are the Bias circuit and the cosmetics? I've been waiting to find out. If you don't know for sure, could you contact the Tech/R&D/whom it may concern and find out?

As far as I know, and as to everthing else anyone I know has heard of, this is correct, just a cosmetic change, and changing up the Bias circut so that it is no longer auto-biaising.
 
Well here's a difference. The YBA-200-2 is listed as coming standard with KT88's. Don't recall seeing that before, but it's on the website as of now. It still is rated at 200w, so I guess they're running them on the cold side, which would make sense given that they have a two-year warranty to cover. I wonder if you could safely up the wattage a bit with a rebiasing? Also curious what brand of KT88's they're using.
