Quick (maybe dumb) monitor question.

Hi all, on a recent gig, I was convinced (begrudgingly) to use a small tilt back amp as my floor (powered) monitor, daisy-chaining it off of the BL’s powered floor monitor. This didn’t work, I got no sound out of it, and in the rush of setup, we didn’t use it. I went old school and blew my voice out.

Same gig coming up this Friday, wanted to ask: the BL’s monitors are Behringer Eurolive F1320D. The manual shows what they call “link outputs” and says it’s “directly connected to the inputs and carries the input signal, unprocessed…to route the signal to another device."

I checked the tilt back amp at home the next day, and it works just fine with a bass plugged in. No issues, plenty loud, but we got virtually nothing out of it as a monitor off of the other monitor.

Any ideas, things to look for? Thanks.

From the Behringer's manual: "The LINK OUTPUT is directly connected to the inputs of the F1320D and carries the input signal with no processing applied."

What form is the input of the first (Behringer) speaker? The F1320's input can take mic or line level input. I don't have any hours on this speaker and there's no schematic in the manual; but from the manual's description, it seem possible that if you were feeding the BL's monitor with his mic, the link output might be at mic level. If so, that would likely be too weak to drive whatever instrument amp you were trying to use as a vocal wedge.

Also, if you were using the "link out" 1/4 connection (instead of the XLR), that jack is TRS. Improper TRS-to-TS cabling could be costing you another 6 dB, which would add to the level problem unless the output is closer to line level.

Frankly, even if you got robust level from the Behringer, I wouldn't think this set-up would sound good. You're likely to have level and impedance mismatch between the Behringer's link output and the instrument level signal your amp expects.

This ^^ about covers it. You'd likely benefit from a small mixer in between the two, but you could also get an inexpensive powered monitor for about the same price. In any case you need to boost the incoming signal for this to work.

Since the tilt-back has an unbalanced instrument input, going with a TRS cable won't make a difference. The Behringer has electronically-balanced outputs and will be fine even though pin 3 (the ring output) will be grounded by a standard TS instrument cable.

Something else was wrong. Bad cable? Use a simple guitar cord and it should work.

As far as "blowing your voice out" goes, doing that often sounds like crap, because you have no idea how vocals are blending with the music, plus you're belting everything at full blast. Just sayin'.

Thanks guys. BL's signal into the Behringer is from his mixer. He also does this same thing when he needs an additional wedge, uses his own tilt back amp and claims it works fine. It could be I just had a bad cord. I was suspecting some kinds of things that derrico mentioned, impedance issues, jack/plug mismatch etc. Just not an expert on that stuff. But I'll try a different guitar cord.

Now, would it be any better to use the XLR out of the Behringer, going into my amp with a line matching transformer? (Or would a mic cord be completely wrong?)

And the voice...yup, I'm 58...I should KNOW these things...unfortunately my young whippersnapper BL (48) is in LOVE with his "expensive" (for him) Behringer all powered speakers system. Personally, my crappy old Yamaha mixer head with passive speakers works better.

Does the BL's monitor have XLR combo plugs for the Thru out? If so, then a 1/4" shielded (guitar) cable should be right. ...otherwise the right gender XLR to 1/4" adapter ought to work as well ...at either end. If the signal's hot enough for his monitor, then it should be for your kickback as well.

Yup, combo plug, if by that you mean the out has both XLR and 1/4 inch. I also thought just maybe the 1/4 inch jack is bad, so I'd try the XLR next time too. Thanks guys.

By combo plug I mean a relatively new-fangled mic/line connector that takes both 1/4" and XLR in the same socket, similar to Neutrik/1/4" combo power connections. ...but it sounds like you're on track to a fix in any case. Good luck!
