Quilter Bass Block v803

Who's running compression with the V803? I'm talking myself into adding a comp pedal to my setup. Looking for fattening and tone shaping first, some dynamic control second. The Diamond family (including Lusithand Alma) is intriguing, also JHS Pulp n Peel, and the Sushi FX offerings (Single Slice and the new Watt comp/DI). Been reading the reviews on the compressor megathread and listening to YT demos.

What are you using and what does it do for you?

I'm using the AirChild Six-Sixty based on the recommendation / experiences of a fellow TBer and Quilter user. It's an emulation of the Fairchilds used back in the 60's / 70's recording studios. Bit of an unknown but I wanted to be different.

I use my v803 into a Quilter bassdock 12 pretty exclusively these days and I recently started using a Boss BC-1X. Fairly pedestrian by Talkbass standards but I've been happy with it.

The most versatile compressor I know of:

Source Audio Atlas Compressor

For me personally, if I could afford the Cali76, that's the way I would go, if not then the Keeley Bassist Compressor.

DISCLAIMER: I have never owned a compressor, though.

Depends on the bass, but I switch between the warm setting for my stingray and jazz basses, and qtube setting with my p bass. Always use the scoop input. I typically run the eq fairly flat on the v803 and adjust the eq on my active basses or use the Sadowsky preamp pedal for my p bass.

I have been using my Quilter Bass Block V803 for about a year now. I'm constantly amazed by the sound and the price point. I also own a Jad Freer Sisma (love it) and a Demeter VTBP-M-800D Bass Head (also love it). But I have found that the Sisma is 100% old school and not for clean for slapping. The Demeter is super clean sounding and great for slapping but wont give any grit like the Sisma does - think Ampeg B15. The Quilter V803 does both at the flick of a switch and is so light and compact. Amazing amp that is well designed.

I also own both the Quilter and Sisma, and love both. The more I use them, the more I'm amazed by the sound quality, clever design, and attention to details.
What I prefer in the Quilter:
  • Incredibly lightweight
  • User interface for tone shaping - using the "voice" swtich to quickly change the character (I would have prefered if the normal/scoop option had been a switch instead of a second input)
What I prefer in the Sisma:
  • Better legibility of the controls on stage (white labels above of the knob)
  • Chirurgical precision of the double semi-parametric mids… if needed
  • I have a vague impression that when played really loud, Sisma sounds "even more glorious" than the Quilter, but that could very well be a confirmation bias on my side. Unfortunately I don't do super loud gigs very often and when I do, I don't have the time to take 2 amps and A/B test them.
I honestly don't know which one I would sell if I could only keep one, but since the Quilter costs half the price of the Sisma, it should sell like hotcakes.

Just speculation…I would probably really like the new Mesa. I've read some reviews that mention some of the same characteristics that I like about the V803, descriptors like "it sounds BIG", and in higher gain settings it will get "grindy" and "in your face". But….the Quilter already does all that.

I mean, I want one of those too. I tried one and it was dope! But the Quilter was in stock on black Friday, so that came first. Insert trite quip here about it being truly a golden age ;)
