Quotes after a show

In the eighties I played in a fairly hard rock outfit (didn't everyone, though?). Looking back, I'd rate us as an enthusiastic solid band now but not superstars. But it was a good lifestyle.

We played a Saturday night headline for a pretty full club of sweaty punters, and it all seemed to go very well. Once we had finished, though, it was apparent that our drinks rider hadn't appeared backstage yet. I was parched, so before hitting the showers I ducked out from backstage and went to the bar to grab a drink to cool off with.

So here I am at the bar, waiting my turn, surrounded by punters, and wearing leather trousers and a very wet black shirt (80's remember) with a towel around by neck to soak up the sweat from my wet hair (and feeling a bit self concious, obviously).

The guy next to me in line looks at me and says "What did you think of the band?". I'd literally been on stage 2 minutes earlier for nearly 2 hours! So, what to say? I don't wanna do the whole "Don't you recognise me?" routine, but I am curious. "Umm . . they were ok I think. What did you think?" He gave me a very disparaging look and said "If you didn't enjoy that, you don't know music and you shouldn't be here, buddy!"

So, on the one hand that's a very encouraging review (and I'm sorta pleased), but on the other, exactly how observant is this fan of ours? I guess it's just bassist invisibility syndrome again, but sheesh!

Man I wish I could blend like that.... here recently I've been getting

"you add so much life to your band" and "I want to have your children" (ok maybe the last one was a bit of an overstatement.....)

and for some reason I still get compliments on my singing.... my ex showed up to my last show and told me "I didn't realize you could sing like that" I was like ***? lol... anyways

HAHAHAHA.

During a break in the middle of our set, a customer of the pub we were playing comes up and tells us 'well lads, yer not bad, ya know? I mean, I didn't hate it'. Of course we didn't really know what to make of the man's ambiguous statement and got back to the show. After we finished the entire set, the same man came up saying 'lads, that was f***ing brilliant' and he was being 100% sincere as we had seen him dancing during the latter part of our set! I think maybe some people just like mess with ya...

Well, I've had a couple of stories for ya. Lets start off at my own gig. We have a song that when we play first in our set, we also play a little intro to it as well. After a gig, a girl came up to me and said "I never really saw the point in the bass till that song!". I was pretty pleased with that! :D

My other is from a time when I looked more like my brother. We both wear glasses, we had similar haircuts and we're a similar height. I'd go to his gigs and people would come up to me (as they were still visibly packing down on stage) and say "Well done mate, that was awesome!". I'd be as polite as I could and say "No it wasn't me, it was my brother". However, considering my brother was both playing the guitar and singing lead vocals, I'd have thought that people would pay attention to him. Looks like it isn't only bassists that get ignored! :p

Friday night while we were packing up our gear the sound guy came up on stage and said "Nice job man. Your tone was so good I didn't even bother using the DI or micing your cabs. I wish everyone sounded like that."

I thought that was a great end to the evening since when we were setting up he walked into one of my horrendous farts and yelled "stinky ******!" :)

The drummer in my new band likes to tell me that I suck when we're done playing.

Me: Good show guys. We really had some folks moving out there.

Singer: Yeah, I think we rocked em.

Guitar: We definitely don't suck even a little!

Drummer: (to me) except you man, you suck.

Me: Thanks man. I make it look easy don't I? Sucking that is.

He's got a dry sense of humor and doesn't feel comfortable with the lovefest. This is his way of showing appreciation. I think........

Friday night!

Girl whispers to drummer: what's the bassists name?

Drummer: Robert

*she walks away then comes back in a bit and grabs my ass*

Girl: heyyyyyy, I you'r pretty cute! I wanna marry you!

Me: I gots a girlfriend, but the drummer and guitarist are both single!

She walked away and occasionally comes by to hit on me throughout the night haha

Another from loadup before a gig!

Guitarist: what's morning glory?

Other guitarist: well Ev (drummer) experiences it a lot.

Me: Ev's new stage name is MG!!

We now introduce him as MG at every show!:P

Last jazz gig guy comes up on break and does the whole "you guys are really great" thing, "highly original sound", rarararara..., follows up with "I could get you plenty of gigs in Sydney" we're all thinking the usual, yeah right, drunken egit, but keys gives him an email anyway, mostly to get him out of our faces.

Turns out he actually is a promotor in Sydney and he was over here with a band he put together for a one off show. I'll take a paid trip to Aussie any day, cross fingers.

I was tanding at a urinal after the last set of the night. A man walks in a takes the spot next to me. Starts talking saying, "you guys were great"...blah blah blah. He takes a brief pause then looks at me and asks "Have you ever been to prison ?"

::shake:: ::zip:: ::run::

A drunken stumbler we named "Likes to fight guy" asks us...

"Who do I have to fight to be the singer in your band?" :eyebrow:

This actually happened before the show. He was kicked out of the bar before we were done playing, before we even started playing for that matter... for fighting. :D
