Jake, I'll take a look closer at the carved Strunals at L&M. In the mean time however, I'll keep my eyes open for a Shen hybrid.
Sam, the reason I'm looking to buy one is because I'm going off to university within the next two years. The one I'm building most likely will not be ready in time for that. If the wood is even dry enough to start by then, I'll be surprised.
In response to the original topic at hand; my teacher, and luthier I'd be taking this bass to seems quite confident that something like this isn't a difficult fix (by his standards anyways, I know he restored a bass that was nearly completely shattered). But, with the help of you guys and gals; I'm hesitant to pull the trigger.
