"Mr. Magic," Grover Washington Jr. I take lessons from a guy who's been playing funk bass for 35 years and this is the song we started with. Good practice on circle of fifths, too.

A really accessible one with lots of improvisational possibilities is Shaky Ground. Doesn't move too fast, and the changes are next to nothing. I've beaten the tar out of that tune many different ways with many different bands, and it never ceases to be fun. You can find plenty of recorded versions. A few that leap to mind were from Delbert McClinton, The Temptations, and New York Rock And Soul Revue...seems like Phoebe Snow sang on that one.
What I like about this live song is how tight the whole band is live. I actually love it the most for Bernard Purdy's drumming.
But Mr Jermott on bass gives a great lesson on holding a repetitious tight riff, with the transition or whatever you want to call it, where he does some awesome speedy and tasty subtle changes.

It's a little more chilled out, but I recommend Cannonball Adderley's version of 'Why am I Treated so Bad?'. It's basically just a blues, but you gotta listen for the changes and there's a small vamp before you get back to the top. Easy as hell, though.
