RIP EVH

I got to see Van Halen 4 times in 1978; first opening for Journey and Montrose, then a couple of months later at the first Texxas Jam in the Cotton Bowl, then later in November they played 2 shows in Houston opening for Black Sabbath and I went to both shows.

At one of the Black Sabbath/Van Halen shows, a couple of my friends couldn't get tickets so the decided they'd try to sneak in. They ended up finding a way in thru the roof of the place in some kind of crawl space, and then ended up moving some ceiling tiles to drop down into a room only to find out it was Van Halen's dressing room, and Van Halen didn't get them ejected because they thought it was cool the effort they went to to get into the show. So then those friends met us at our seats before the show started and told us this story and we found it hard to believe. But then when Van Halen first hit the stage, David Lee Roth said "Man this is a crazy night, fans wanting to get in so bad they're coming in thru the ceiling".

I got to see Van Halen several more times after that year including shows with Sammy Hagar.
Eddie Van Halen was a legend for sure and will be greatly missed!

Yes, me too sooo Bummed out! spent yesterday watching videos & listening to the music. sound track of my youth! everyone wanted to be him, play & dress, hairstyle, there's a hole in my chest, an emptiness I cant fill : ( I tried to ready myself months ago when they said he was getting sicker, not a good sign, but it still hurts: (
he inspired me to rebuilld my #1! feels similar to when Randy & Stevie past, I remember that took a long time to get used to. I hope Wolf is making music! I need some good news!!

A singular talent, one of those guys you KNOW who it is in 3 seconds of anything he ever played. I shall always remember that unlike so many who look so pained while in the depths of doing their thing, he'd just smile like crazy from all those musical endorphins flooding his brain like a fire hose: That's how he could play like that.

I believe I've posted this before, but today would be a good day to revisit it. It's from a series of interviews at The Smithsonian Museum with immigrants who found success after coming to America. It's great as it's not the 'rock press' and none of the usual 'Sammy said this' or 'Dave said that' BS, and quite revealing, and in a way the story of a lot of immigrants.



I was working retail music stores when he hit, and it was mass hysteria among guitar players the way Beatlemania hit teenage girls !

He started the Whole kit building/ modding, parts caster CRAZE! I remember my brother bought his Starlicks tape & I could play part of "Somebody get a doctor!" to my guitarist friends amazement! I was a tiny star for a moment! 'til I got exposed!

Yeah, Smoking's Bad! no matter what he said, took my DAd too, cigarettes are so Hard to kick! I quit twice, 2nd time I Had to. but its so so hard to stop! I heard he started Vaping probably worst, but probably cuts the cravings! "there goes My Hero!" RIP!

when i saw the quote from Tom Morello calling Eddie an "apex talent", that really gut-punched me.

definitely a once-in-a-generation musician.

to this day, i still use tapping harmonics to spell out chords (when tasteful, of course!). that's Eddie to me.

RIP Eddie. hope you, Jimi, Dime, and Stevie are trading fours at the Pearly Gates. now that's Heaven.

Sorry, I keep posting, just kinda really bummed My good friend made cases for VH & got invited to a rehearsal & took me, at the fabulous forurm, stood next to valerie B., many stars where there, saw tom morello, John 5 & zak wyld! Eddie was arguably the most influential guitar player of the last 50 years. I can’t think of anyone who inspired more people to play guitar than him. And they all wanted to play like him. First Neil Peart, Now EVH. I feel like saying to John Paul Jones and Stanley Clarke... look both way before crossing the street. God is making a kick ass band in 2020.

My own personal “Beatles on Ed Sullivan” moment. That night the decision was made in my mind to be a degenerate and play music for a living. It was probably a big mistake, but Van Halen gets the credit, or blame, depending on ones viewpoint.
Being too young to drive, I was taken to the show by my older sister Karen (now dead from cancer) and went with my best childhood buddy Eddie. (Also dead from cancer) . How ironic.
It’s very surprising how badly I took the News of EVHs passing.
I guess looking back at it now, I Finally realize how someone’s life path can be altered from one simple experience .

I often say, only half-joking, that I wish I had never witnessed punk rock, because it had such a huge impact on me, yet contained so many negative and nihilistic messages, specifically in its glorification of losers, and losing. Bad path, Kids!!
