July 10th, 1981. Chicago at The International Amplitheatre. Still remember Eddie’s playing clearly. Whole band was great! Certainly changed everything a TRUE innovator.
As has been mentioned several times; 2020 has not been kind to humanity. RIP Eddie Van Halen, a Giant among pioneer musicians.
Some of the most fun shows ever. That first ‘79 show was 2nd Row center stage(BBB-C). It was just awesome.

Eddie was arguably the most influential guitar player of the last 50 years. I can’t think of anyone who inspired more people to play guitar than him. And they all wanted to play like him. First Neil Peart, Now EVH. I feel like saying to John Paul Jones and Stanley Clarke... look both way before crossing the street. God is making a kick ass band in 2020.

How many musicians can be recognized for starting an entirely new genre of music? Although I never considered Van Halen hair metal, we cannot deny that nearly every metal guitarist in the early 80s was trying to emulate one guitarist, Eddie.
Plus, he started the entire aftermarket/ FrankenStrat, build-it-yourself industry.
Eddie’s first cover of GP. I remember being 18 and this always hanging on my friend’s bedroom wall.
Might have been there too. Really good acoustics in that place ( NOT! ).
Saw Yes there around the same time. Really good - aw crap - that place made Chris Squire sound muddy!

I saw Van Halen in 1979 and Eddie was a force of nature that night. Hearing of his passing today brought back vivid memories of that concert and what a thrill his playing brought to my 17-year-old ears. He was truly an original and an innovator. Thanks for the memories and inspiration!
My first thought was sadness, then relief. He's been dealing with so many health issues for decades.Well damn.
I got to see him live several times. He was the man.

Glad i got to meet him way back in the day at a taping of one day at a time (i also had a crush on Valerie)
The blonde guy sitting between Ed and Al is a guy I’ve played with on and off for decades. Back in ‘75 or sum such we got in his mom’s car and headed off too the local mountains in search of a rumored party that Van Halen was playing at. We ended up driving all the way around the entire freakin’ mountain range looking for this party. Never found it. They were a local party band at the time, but the only band we would ever do something like that for. They were that good. Even then.
That was likely Rat Salad the band before DLR, (with Michael Anthony on Vox) and that party was likely in the hills over Glendora. (azusa Canyon) 75-76 summer July 4th?
