Not often discussed but definitely influential to many. Some lovely lines, great tone and apparently a lovely fella.

Cool outfit, I know quite a few fans. Very supportive bassist among jangling chimey guitars. Major late 80’s UK band, set the stage for the Britpop of the 90’s…

The Stone Roses were one of the most important bands of my life. I used to play along to Mani's bass lines in my childhood bedroom. 63 really isn't old. That's very sad.

yeah he was the one with the wild striped paint job on his Jack Cassidy bass? never listen to him much, to be honest, but RIP man, and that was one cool looking bass.

I don't remember him playing a Jack Casady bass, but he did a DIY Jackson Pollock paint job on his Rickenbacker 4005.

I found his 4005 for sale in Andy's Guitars, on Denmark Street, for £11,000.

If it was the Pollock bass, it had been restored back to it's original finish, so I suspect it was a backup.

He also used to play Rickenbacker 3000 basses - moreso in Primal Scream; but I remember film of him losing his rag, on stage with the Stone Roses, and hurling the poor thing off into the wings.

Yeah, he did some really nice work : equally adept at being minimal, sparse, and reserved, but also banging out some pretty monster riffs, or throbbing dub.

A really tasteful player, that elevated the songs without ever stepping on the guitars, or vocals.

Oh, man. As my first band as bassist got rolling, our set list was probably half Stone Roses covers. Solid, supportive yet distinctive lines that were accessible for me as I worked to "unlearn" my guitar habits for bass.

No, he wasn’t groundbreaking or anything like that, but he always came up with tasty stuff in the context of the band, who were huge in the UK…
