Yep. My dad used to use the term but instead of "poof" he would say a person was a "poofter". Still, it didn't really have a hateful (against gays) connotation back then.
If it matters, he is Scottish.I always thought 'poofter' was the Australian version. Who knows! As I get older I have to reconcile the fact that sometimes my parents' language diverges from my own. I wonder what words my kids will cringe at when I use them, going on the assumption that I have kids in the future.
