R.I.P. Neil Peart

I'm shocked at the lack of Rush songs our local classic rock stations have played today......
One of the local stations in Atlanta played a block of Rush songs to "honor Neil Peart" when the news broke. This would have been fine, except that the 20-something DJ included some cuts from the first album, when the drummer was John Rutsey.

Corporate "rock" radio.

Thanks for reposting those YouTube videos yesterday. An apt tribute.
Aw, thanks. I saw the first post about Neil's death at around 4:00pm in a Rush group I belong to on Facebook. I immediately dismissed it as garbage... then I started digging around and the internet just blew up. Within the hour, everyone I knew was posting about it. I made the decision to sit it out, as everything I would have said on the matter was being said. After a time, reality set in and I knew I had to say something myself. The video was one that had been sitting on my desktop for a couple of years. I wasn't really crazy about it and I never got around to uploading it. I just used it as a vehicle for the the words that I wanted to write. Part of me wishes that I hadn't uploaded it because it has become my most popular video of all time and I'm not at all about trying to capitalize on tragedies such as this. My wife was crying when she got home for work last night. She's been on the Rush train since we were engaged in 1990. The Presto tour was "her" first show and we've seen every one since. I'm a bit more stoic, or, should I say, less capable of expressing my emotions and it took a day to set in, but I have to say, Rush was a huge part of my life and Neil's death is tough.

Greg Lake’s passing messed me up, but not like this. The last 24 hours have been hard. I’m mourning as if I lost a dear friend. I’m really sad to know he was fighting this for so long privately, but I wouldn’t have expected anything else.

It’s been a good day of watching interviews and listening to their great discography though. Actually got me playing again (haven’t touch my bass in a month +).

Anyways, Neil, I hope you reached the heart of Cygnus and came out a God. Thanks for everything.

It seems to me that there hasn't been such an outpouring of genuine grief over the untimely passing of a musician since Jerry Garcia. I think it's amazing, considering how RUSH has always been marginalized or ignored by the powers that decide what's cool in the music scene.

Peart has always been featured and given due respect by the music journalists who cover drums and percussion, but not by the press coverage of music in general.

Now I'm going to sit by myself in a dark room and play "Permanent Waves" in its entirety on headphones.

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt
That's far too fleet

Lyrics from "Freewill"
written by Neil Peart

Sad day indeed.
Condolences to his family & friends--including Geddy & Alex.
I posted a Rush song in the Song of the Day thread, instead of the one I was going to post (it will get posted later)
I think a lot of those radio stations are so pre-programmed there's no easy way to change it up when something like this happens.
That or they just don't get it.

Bowie hit just as hard for me
Funny you should mention Bowie. Right after my aforementioned "Moe's Incident", I walked over to the Guitar Center two doors down. I decided to grab the new, official, 2020 RUSH calendar celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Presto". (For the record, I very rarely pay full price for a calendar. I usually wait until February to get one on clearance sale. :greedy:)

As I walked up to the checkout counter, I saw a bunch of vinyl LP's on clearance sale. Right up front was Bowie's "Blackstar" on two discs. I couldn't help but notice the clear packaging revealed the all-black, textless label and I had a flash of inspiration. There are people who will cut LP's into pickguards for a modest fee, something I've been thinking of having done for some time. And since I dig both black pickguards and David Bowie, why not kill two birds with one stone?

Apparently CCR, Tom Petty and Bad Company are more important.
Lol. Same in NYC. Nothing but the same Tears for Fears, Police and Petty songs they always play. I keep on joking "Man, Sting must've died this week..they're playing the Police so much!"

News of Neil's death hit me harder than I'd have expected. Largely, I suppose, due to his prowess. Not to mention the fact that RUSH had such a profound impact on my musicianship at an early age. Learning and playing those tunes couldn't help but make you a better player. But I was also struck by the cause of his death... glioblastoma brain tumor, the same thing that my big brother succumbed to. News of Neil's death conjured up images of my brother when he was sick, and I could only imagine what Neil and his family went through as the sickness progressed. To that end, I was impressed that although Neil died on Tuesday, the news didn't hit until Friday, a testament to his family and friends, and time for them to begin their grieving process in relative peace. Now the rest of us can grieve with them.

I can't help but wonder how long Alex and Geddy knew of Neil's cancer. Of course they weren't going to say anything and I can totally understand and respect that. Just wondering.
I'm sure they knew from the start and just kept it in the family. Rush was really good at that type of stuff. Inevitably the story will all come out because people probably won't let the issue go. It does bring up good topics though like how much does the public deserve to know about the private lives of public figures. I'd say the hardest thing for me about them keeping it a secret is that the news was that much more of a shock. It literally blindsided everybody, and maybe I'm nuts, but I feel a collective mourning happening all over the country right now. Things just feel diminished out there. This death was like a losing a close family member, and the emotions are extremely similar.

Same, not a ton of local play.

However, I switched over to SiriusXM Radio in the car this afternoon and even the 80's station was playing Big Money and at the end of the song, they were kind enough to announce that SiriusXM Channel 27 (Deep Tracks) dropped it previous format to pay homage to Rush 24/7 for an indefinite time span starting today in response to massive fan support/demand.

So any SiriusXM users might want to check that out while it lasts - they were playing some great stuff earlier today.

See if you can tune in 105.5FM WDHA out of North Jersey. Not only are the very RUSH/Prog-friendly, but they’re the only station in the region to interview Geddy Lee a couple of hours before he did a signing for his solo CD “My Favorite Headache”.

Last night, I gave them a call, requesting they play anything of theirs that wasn’t “Freewill”, “Closer To The Heart”, “Spirit Of The Radio” or “Tom Sawyer”. It wasn’t a slam on those songs, but they’re probably the most frequently played on the radio and I was hoping they’d dig a little deeper into their catalogue. So, I took the DJ at his word when he told me they had some songs already in the pipeline. I’ll have to check their playlist to see what they ran with, since I’m about 150 miles away from their station.
