In a fluffy, terribly icky world of early ‘80’s pop fluff, along came The Pogues and made me realize that there was something way more down to earth and so much more fun to listen to and be part of.
Shane always marched to his own beat and while his lifestyle is not really to be championed, he was real and gritty and honest.
His lyrics still stick in my head on a regular basis.
A well read poet with his finger on the pulse of Irish displacement.
RIP and go well into the night Shane.

Over the years, I went to see Shane four times and only got to see him perform once. 2x with the Pogues, 2x with the Popes. One time, he passed out on the train to Detroit (he liked to travel alone by train on tour sometimes) and woke up in Chicago, missing the gig. Another time, he passed out while walking onto stage and the band left him there in a heap for the whole set and took turns singing. Everybody got a refund. Was still a damn fine show. Another time he had a “medical problem” and canceled. I think he was passed out in the backstage room. And one time, I saw a brilliant performance by Shane and the Pogues. So, I batted .250 seeing him.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

RIP, he accomplished a hell of a lot despite his problems.
