Rack Compressor live rig setup

Hey guys,
I'm not great at chaining rack effects, compressors etc. in a live rig setup. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Im trying to chain up a Art Pro VLA 2 Compressor in my setup but can't get the right configuration going with the back outputs and inputs and all that

I have an 70's SVT. Any advice on how to chain it up?

If your amp has an effects loop, then the comp should go in there.

If not, then you may have to get some sort of preamp to drive the comp; instrument level alone won't work with the comp AFAIK.

EDIT: just looked up the SVT; it seems that you can patch the 'preamp out' to the input of your compressor, then loop the comps output back to the 'power amp in'. This should work fine; someone should chime in soon with confirmation.

Right now Im going Pre Amp Out of the SVT to the input of channel 1 of the compressor and then Output of channel 1 of the compressor to the power amp In of the SVT.

My compressor is a two channel, so now what about Channel Two?

If I put it in link mode (stereo) would that automatically let me run channel two as well?

In that case do I need some kind of preamp?

You don't need to use channel two, as your bass runs in mono.

All the 'stereo link' does is copy the settings from channel one to channel two, ignoring channel two's knobs. This is so you can set up a compressor on a stereo source more quickly.

You can use channel one of the compressor on it's own with no problems; the sound won't change if you press the stereo link button as nothing's plugged into channel two.

If you run the system as you are doing so, you don't need a preamp.

Dumb question... do you need a compressor... or just have one and want to carry it along?

(I'm not a hater --- have a few... in live sound, the consensus will be the less things in a chain the lower noise/more reliable)

I was using a Ampeg SVT pro 6 which has one built in and I always had it on cause I just felt the signal was more consistent in the mix. I might just have gotten used to the sound, I don't know yet. Time will tell!

You can but if the OP doesn't have a specific purpose in mind (ch1 dynamics, ch2 limiter for ex.) then why?
