Ive got some questions about racks.
Ive seen racks that say they are 4U or 6U and heads and other rackmount items that say the same thing. How much is a U? Becuase clearly a 4U case has more than 4 holes.
This may seem like a silly question but when do you need a shallow rack case or a deep one? Is it merely based on the overall length of what is going in there?
And lastly does anyone know what rack space a Backline 600 head is and if these ears would fit?

Yup, 1-3/4" equals the height of one U space in a rack. And a 19" rack is NOT the width that slides between the rack rails, it includes the rack rails and ears on your rack-mounted gear.

Another thing to consider... not all rack-mounted devices are the same depth sticking into your rack. And not all racks are the same depth. You'll notice this most when rigging up very powerful PA-sized power amplifiers. Go hit a store and inspect the different rack cases. You'll find the typical "effects racks" are only around 12-14" deep, while full-size rack cases can be up to 20" deep. Make sure if you buy a rack, you don't buy a shortie when you need to fit deep devices into it.
