Radial JDI versus the Audient ASP 880 DI

Will I get better results with the Radial JDI Purely for recording…?

I have already have the Audient ASP 880 I was wondering if buying a dedicated DI would be an upgrade.

Recording Fender Precision and 1972 Musicmaster with upgraded pickup.

The Audient has a DI and is probably pretty good at that price point. I doubt the JDI would be a huge improvement.

Any differences would be exceedingly minimal.

What's the input impedance of the Audient's instrument input? If it's high enough there are some circumstances where you might even prefer that to a JDI, especially w/ a passive P Bass (and 20+ feet of cable). But, that would still be a preference, not an objective improvement.

I would buy the JDI from a shop with a good return policy and try it out. I often prefer a passive box.

I try to stay out of recording threads as everything is pretty much personal preference and subjective. I am just too much a trafo guy and appreciate what some good iron does.

Thread Drift: I worked with engineer Eric Small back when he had his own company manufacturing radio & TV broadcast electronics, and one of his audio products was advertised as being available with either electronically-balanced i/o or, for a nominal upcharge, with Jensen transformer-balanced i/o. I once asked Eric what percentage of customers opted for the transformers, and he told me "We've never sold one to date...but I keep hoping. I just love transformers!"

That was probably a very interesting job. Before Orban? I wonder if people bought the solid state over transformers due to numbers on a spec sheet?

No, this was after Eric's work with Bob Orban on the Optimod; I worked with him in the late 1980s when he was running Modulation Sciences.

Decided it’s not necessary to get the RadialI recorded a bass part and processed the DI with EQ and Comp and is be lying if the sound I got didn’t put a smile on my face…sometimes I just need to fight the GAS…cheers for the input…

Late to the party, but good call. I have a RNDI and an Audient iD44. The JFET DI in the Audient nulls to the RNDI around -40dB to -50dB. My ears aren't good enough to discern a difference. I keep the RNDI for the "thru" jack when passing the signal to an external preamp, but that's it.

I play active basses only, and I can't recall any testing in passive mode to weigh in on that.

Don’t be so hard on yourself! No one has ears that can detect differences of 40-50db down, or at least if they do they’re either very young and already a statistical outlier, or just lying which could be proven through double blind testing which they wouldn’t be willing to do in the first place . In the case of 40db that’s cutting the source in half, then in half again, then in half again, then in half again.

Oh yes. Another forum I hang out in often has the people waxing poetically of their hearing prowess. Until the blind testing starts. I love a nice level-matched blind test.
