Ramp?

I've read a few threads here and elsewhere where people refered to using a "ramp" on their bass. Can someone please explain to me what exactly a ramp is, how it's used and what its purpose is?

Don't mean to sound like a total dunce, but I'm new at this.

Simply put, it's a block of wood that's mounted between the pu's. Used primarily for speed playing so your fingers don't go to far below the strings, just glance off the ramp.
Also for thumb placement and for bassists who usually dig in when playing can still dig in but not allowing the fingers go too far below the strings. Not because of speed playing but because of digging in with a different feel.

I've also seen it between the neck and the neck pup. Just depends on where you feel you need it.
