Overall, I really miss the vibe of the old Bass Player. I guess the one thing about the folks at the UK Bass magazine taking over America's Bass Player is that I don't have to handover $15 for the UK magazine anymore.

This month, there is a great, but short interview with the great Randy Hope-Taylor. It is interesting to know that his only gig now is playing bass at a Pentecostal church. I was also surprised to know that he had no knowledge of theory when he was recording all of those fantastic albums with Incognito. He said he has only gotten into theory in the last five years. That said, R H-T said he did read chord charts for session, and he notes that he missed out on some gigs in the theater because he could not sight read.

I will say one thing to any newbie who might be mislead. Not being able to read does not mean that he showed up to gigs and music flowed out of him. Randy Hope-Taylor surely practiced his @$$ off to be where he was in the UK music scene. The same is true of Pino Pallidino, or any other non-readers.

That's what I was thinking too! I also want to stress that between hard work and natural gifts, some people can thrive without being to read or deep formal knowledge of music. It is dangerous for a new player to assume that because someone like Randy Hope-Taylor could do it, he or she can do it too.
