It is an awesome piece of gear. I've used one for years now. It just depends on what you want to use it for. I'm assuming since you bought the Rane you are going more for line leveling, limiting, and just keeping everything in check rather than a really effected, squashed sound. I personally don't use the enhance side of the unit at all, so those portions are totally turned off. Then I set the limiters threshold (start playing your loudest stuff, with your amp at a low volume, and look at the clipping light). Get it to where it hits the limiter to your liking. Then go onto the compression side of things and do the same, now you have the ratio knob as well. So not only do you need to find out where you want the compressor to activate in terms of volume, but also how tight it squashes down when it does activate. And do this for both sides obviously (lows and highs).

My thought was to use the unit to affect the fundamental (Xover at about 200Hz) and keep that all leveled out. Maybe only put the limiter on the upper end to tame the occasional popping of a string. Or maybe not do anything above 200Hz. I want all the harmonics of the string to ring through.

I have used compression only on the low side with no compression on the high side and had a very transparent but controlled tone.
