Rane DC24 - Compressor

Ok, so here are my initial impressions on this Rack Compressor.

I've not had long to play with it, played with it for about 30minutes so far.

I've been using the EBS Multi Comp for about 2 years or so in multi band mode and really liked it but at the same time I felt it was missing something, couldn't tell you what that something was but it just felt something was missing.

So I've got the Rane setup in multi band mode with one channel compressing the low and the other compression the highs, so far I'm very impressed it gives me a massive range of sounds which all sound very natural. I've always found pedal compressors to pretty much be on and off and there be one sweet spot but this has lots of tones for every situation, I started off with some sample settings I found in the TB archives :p and it sounded huge and bassy like nothing I'd ever heard out the EBS, Aphex or Demeter compressors.

I've tweaked my settings a bit so I've got more highs in that this example I used. I still need to try this out in a band which will be Sunday but so far I'm pretty glad I sold the EBS. This unit is a lot cleaner as well far less hiss when you add a bit of gain to the signal.

Cheers

I don't think that would be particularly helpful in this case as its set to my specific setup, where as with pedal I just use a passive jazz in to the pedal into the computer, this is wired in with my amps, wireless's and effects so its not going to be a true test of what it sounds like.

Well it's Sunday and I got to kick this with my band and OMG it is simply fantastic I have more tone that I've ever had, my lows are lower and clearer my highs are punchier without being harsh and its so thick you can just about cut it with a chainsaw.

I don't think I'll ever compare this to the EBS again as I feel that the EBS has really been lacking now I've hear this. My producer dropped by this practice and was very impressed with how much bigger my sound was.

I didn't seem to have any problems with my effects but I don't have a filter at the moment, I will be getting another one soon though but it sounded great with my fuzz's and distortion etc. The noise gate was pretty good as well though it didn't trigger when i had high gain pedals on I guess the hum was above the threshold but that's fine.

I don't know what more to say, I'm so glad I sold the EBS now so feel free to ask me questions if my post has been a bit vague.

Also Bongo this thing is silent its awesome :D

Best affordable compressor for bass that I've ever used. Not to mention the crossover and the dual downward expansion/gating and limiters. I had three and sold two to talkbass and extendedrangebassist people, and wonder if I was sane. But the two that were on PA are going to be replaced with Driverack PA or Peavey VSX26 speaker management systems, which I'll also try in bass rigs : }

Make sure you read all the Rane lit, like how DC24s were used to do tracks on Roger Nichols produced hit records and such ; }
