No, in Australia such terms are commonly used larrikinisms. You've adding an implied tone perhaps because you're unfamiliar with this fact, or perhaps because this is a static medium. Either way the OP appears un-phased so that should be the end of this conversation.
The most masculine thing a strapping young lad can do in your land is become a Queen Scout, amirite? Nothing says 'I survived Western Australia' like Queen.
Yes! It always seems like someone is short a bass player. That's another point... There is only one bass player is ensembles(except orchestra).

I've been playing for 45+ years now, and I can tell ya I've made a lot more money on bass than on guitar, and I play both proficiently. Keep at it, and ignore the idiots. As for multi-instrumentalists being better musicians, maybe. But I know a guy (was in a band with him for a couple of months before I got hip to him) who claims to play a number of stringed instruments. He can make musical sounds on 'em from time to time, but he's no where near competent on any of 'em.

Seriously.....this was always my thought.......
If bass is so easy, how come nobody wants to play it?
I went through it with one of our old guitar players. He wanted to try it out, he said it was easy, so I handed off my bass at a practice. After one song (which he played very poorly) he gave it back and never asked to play it again.
Is it easy to play? Well, it's easy to get noise out of it. Is it easy to play well? Like anything else........no.
See? I was not insulted by that in the slightest.

IPYF, you said the phrase was common in Oz. Yet you fail to note your location as Australia in your profile. I can't fault others for finding the phrase insulting as it typically is in the US, and since the majority of posters are US based and often assumed to be so unless otherwise noted. Thus often it is easy to mistakenly construe your intent lacking knowledge of different cultural perspective. Something to consider.
