Rap appreciation!

I don't think Eminem has been mentioned here. What do you guys think of him?

I think he is a very tallented MC and lyricwriter, but imo the direction he is going is sometimes too "adolecent"...

I think EMINEM is great!! he has a realy unique style to his rapping
, also its cool that he writes about real issues that he feels pationate about.

I think he's pretty overrated. He is definitely talented, and he not only writes poignant lyrics but he knows not to take himself too seriously and simultaneously raps about absurdly ridiculous things. For that, I can respect him. But, I dislike the way people typically treat him as some sort of virtuoso rap god.

Personally, my favorite rapper is Pep Love from Hieroglyphics. I've been hip to this guy for many years, but only just recently I actually started LISTENING to him, and I realized... "holy ****ing **** this guy is amazing", his flow mesmerizes me.

eminem is on his way out, i use to be a HUGE follower I mean i knew all the lyrics to all his songs and every time somthing new came out it was exciting and i would listen to it over and over for months but lately i have to say the stuff he has been coming out with is either recycled or just plain lame ie a$$ like that, its just terrible. as for 50cent i have never seen the draw other then for 14 year old girls.

rap however will always have a place in my heart

ie - roots kanye west jay z tupac etc

I dont think he "overrated" he just happens to create stuff that appeals to alot of people , and I havent heard anyone speak of him as a "rap god".

also I think I will download some Pep Love since you speak so highly of him....IL tell you what I think

Plus One.

I've seen a drop-off in quality at around 8 Mile. He has skills, no doubt, but I respect him more than I like him.

Fans of old school hip-hop should definately check out People Under The Stairs, I'm continually astonished by how good they are, great great production. Great great group.

When Em first made it big on the scene. People were regularly proclaiming him to be the world's most talented rapper, and/or one of the most. People considered him to definitely be the best white rapper of all time, and overall he had so much hype around him it was absurd.

He is definitely very talented, and I respect him... but There are far more talented rappers(including some white rappers that'd give Em a run for his money) out there, rapping about just poignant and topical stuff as Em does.

Nowadays, Em isn't getting nearly the amount of publicity that he was getting for a while. He's a little bit 'old news' these days. But when he first made it big, I very clearly remember not only reviewers and critics praising him as being some sort of rap savior, but also his fans vehemently would defend his talent, proclaiming it to be untouchable and profoundly more so than it actually is.

Shrug, He's still talented, and there are lots of reasons to respect him, I don't have anything against him really, I just think he's overrated.

and fans of People under the Stairs should check out Ugly Duckling. Both groups have a very similar vibe going on, yet it's still quite fresh in both cases.

Outkast
DJ Quik
Kurupt's album "Tha Streetz iz a Mutha" shaped most of my teenage years. It was so...Long Beach :D
The Roots
Digital Underground
Eminem used to be tight until he got some money and stopped trying
Bone Thugs N Harmony

Most of today's rap is crappy....just absolutely crappy, autotuned dreadlocked tattooed grilled nonsense. Once in a while I'll catch a song that will draw my attention. Once in a while

I actually prefer Eminem now, over his earlier stuff. I need a Doctor is a fantastic song.

+1 to those suggesting MFDOOM, Madvillian, and a few others. I've always appreciated Dre more behind the board than behind the mic, but some of it is pretty good. I was never sure if Snoop was for real, or tongue-in-cheek, but I think it's awesome that he's diversifying. I have always liked OutKast and was pretty into Busta for a while, but he sorta fell off the map. DMX was always a favorite vocally and lyrically, but you had to find the good songs in between the club/posturing crap. As he's gotten older he's gotten better. I dig Eminem, but have never been one of the fanboys. Clever rhymes and interesting phrasing/rhythm, but not "saving rap". And I never gave a **** whether an artist was black, white, or Martian.

I tend to shy away from the soulless "club" music - 50 Cent and Jay-Z come to mind - and stick with real lyrical content. That's when rap is the best for me. Sadly, by and large it appears that lyrical content is inversely proportional to production value - Madvillian is a great example of that. Amazing phrasing and strong lyricism, marred by less-than-stellar production. I know that's probably intentional, to "keep it raw", but I don't like it.

The best mix of both I've run into is Shad. He's topping my list of favorite rappers. I highly recommend checking out "A Good Name" or anything off of TSOL, really.
