Rare Bass

Hi, I came into possession of this bass and was told that it is a 1966 Haystorm Bass and that only 200 were made. I was wondering if this is true and if there is anything else I should know about it. Thanks!

Looks like a Swedish Hagstrom bass to me. Not sure if the Hagstrom Bass people may be able to help you but here is the club link..ask in there.

It's a 4 bolt Hagstrom H-1-B from production run 853 which did produce 200 of them. However production run 853 was one of 4 production runs of the H-1-B with those runs producing a total of 652 of the H-1-B which is also known as the F-100 in the USA.

The unique thing about run 853 is that it was the only run of the 4 that used a 4-bolt neckplate.

Here's my H-1-B. It's one of 4 that I've owned over the years.

Well, Thornton is definitely THE MAN when it comes to Hagstroms, so... yeah; kinda rare. Seems to be a little... molested?... though. That's a shame, but sadly, not uncommon for older Hagstroms...

Niel Armstrong was the first man that walked on the moon. Back in 1969. So what was the original question, a '66 Haystorm bass, and it's rare? Only 200 Hystorms?

Interesting, never seen a single pickup Hagstrom bass before.

Bass player in one of my early bands had one - white, two pickups. Nice thin neck , low action and very easy to play. He used it with an ampeg b15. We thought it sounded great.

IF no one minds an extra question:

TD, I realize re-issues years later by a new business that bought up the rights can be iffy, but in general, how do you view the re-issue, current Hagstoms? I've always had a soft spot for a Swede bass, and am often shocked how they somehow never come up as a choice with all the renewed interest in short scales.

My loyalty is to the Swedish made Hagstrom's of the 50's-60's-70's and 80's because they were what I played and owned when I was much younger. I have no intention of ever owning one of the Chinese made reissues. That's not to knock them, they're just not my preference.
