Rare Ric on Ebay

uh...are those thumb rests on either side of the the bridge cover?

What you see on either side of the bridge are the retainers for sliding in the chrome bridge cover.
There is a tug mounted below the G string. Yes, Leo was not the only guy to mount tug bars on his Fenders. Remember, the electric bass in it infancy was supposed to mimic an upright, just be louder and lighter.

Rare for sure, and I remember the last time a 1957 4000 showed up on eBay probably 7-8 years ago priced about the same $35k.

That guy has been listing the '60 4000 and the 4002 for just stupid money for about a year now. He must have a friend on one of the editorial boards of one of the commercial bass guitar magazines who featured this same photo and listed price in what appeared to be an unpaid news item. Now, there may be somebody out there who has so much stupid money that he/she would buy this at this price, but like I said, that's stupid money. No sense in paying 35Gs for what may very well be an unplayable instrument . . . or one you wouldn't dare play after you'd spent all that STUPID money on it. Don't quote me, but I think that collectors who have bought early 4000 in the last 10 years or so spent less than a third of what he's asking. I see now he is listing " . . . or best offer" so maybe he'll get a dose of reality.
