RAT 2 distortion

Seems to me you oughtta be able to come up with one of those for $50 used, but if this one sounds GREAT (not just good) to your ear, snatch it up.

I didn't detect that kind of enthusiasm though. $85 goes a long way these days. It could get you your choice of distortions on the used market, or a brand new ehx Bass Mig Muff/MXR El Grande/Electronix Messdrive, and the list goes on...

I wouldn't throw $85 at a current production Rat 2 but like I said, if it REALLY sounds great after considering a couple alternatives and looking at the used listings here on TB, then get it.

1. Check out eBay if you really want a RAT 2. You can get RATs cheaper on eBay if you hunt them down, cool your GAS, and wait for the right price for you!

2. Check out other versions of the RAT (Vintage RAT, Vintage Reissue RAT, etc etc etc). If you're looking for more true bass response, get a vintage or vintage reissue RAT. If you want more gain and less low end, then the RAT 2 is for you.

I have a cruddy little Fender Rumble 15, but in a few months will be getting a Roland Cube 100 or a GK Microbass 1x12.

Nothing wrong with what ya got, but the cube or microbass would be a worthy investment.

At this point I'd advise AGAINST getting the RAT and either taking some time listening to your distortion options or getting one of my other recommendations (above) instead.

It's not a new RAT 2, it's vintage/used from about 10-15 years ago. Though I am looking through the Toronto craigslist, and have found the Boss ODB pedal. Is that good?

I think you need to decide what you want, fuzz, OD or both. That Boss COULD do the trick but so might many other pedals available in Toronto. Set yourself a price limit, experiment, and re-sell what you don't want to keep. There are SO many choices.

Apparently they won't do mods on the newer RATs either, so those are gonna become scarce.

The reason they stopped making/modding those was that they found the newer RATs to be of poor quality construction, too crappy to be worth modding...

I have a Rat2 modded for bass (Link Removed) ask for Chris
Vintage Chip
Adjusted for bass freq's (more bottom end)
on/off light (bright green!)
boss style adapter
AMAZING!

I also have the ProCo bass Juggernaught...No mods needed...very versitile!

I have the vodka mods Rat 2. Wonderful. It has a switch that allows it to be more mild overdrive than out of the box, and a switch that allows it to be more insane than out of the box, and a knob that brings out the bass. But it is still more toward fuzz than the tube overdrive the original poster described. I realize that it costs some bucks, but the Fulltone Bassdrive will do exactly what the original poster is looking for. See if you can try one of those, and then compare others to that sound.

what a about the brand new Sansamp VT bass?

I know I want one for exactly the same purpose: tube like overdrive. Plus the various different characters that the pedal offers.

Completely 2 different beasts there. Nothing alike
Distortion/Fuzzy type sound out of the Rat
Tubey SVT type overdrive as you stated out of the VT
