Rat or Rat clone as low gain od?

anyone here use a Rat or a Rat clone as a low gain OD pedal just to add a touch of grit/grind and warm tubey kinda sound? who uses one like that?
any classic recordings with a Rat used like that?
does the Rat work well in that regard?
most players seem to use it for more gain and full on distortion...right? anyone use it as an always on or almost always on kinda pedal for tube warmth and grit?

I'm using a clone with mods at low gain and like it more than high gain. It's just what works for me in my band. I used to use a RAT2 on high gain back in the day though. You can hear it on the first CAVALE 3 song demo.
Bands like Young Widows/Breather Resist have used both high and low gain. Circa Survive is another proponent of the RAT.

I made my Rat clone initially for only high gain, but have recently started turning it on a lot more and using it for very low gain OD. I absolutely love the way it sounds. I'm also running it with a boss LS-2 for a mixture of dry signal too FWIW.

I use mine with an LS-2 aswell.. gives it more bottom end punch. it is the rat tail, so it sounds good without a blend.. but the blend allows me more options, and i can use really extreme settings and still get away with it.

so...it will do the low gain gritty kinda tubey thing in it's own way? should i go for it? or get something else? do they deliver what i'm asking for? kinda like that low gain Geddy kinda grit? or is a Pork Loin or BB Preamp or something else gonna do it...

Depends on the bass, really. My CV Jazz does the warm gritty thing with my Rat Tail quite nicely. On the other hand, my Yamaha with DiMarzios makes the RT into an awesome, grindy distortion.

However, the RT is an incredible pedal, for sure. If you wanted to go with something Fuzzrocious and wanted the cleanest of the pedals, perhaps the BDPG or asking about a KAEDEN Drive?

How does he get the sort of mid rangey distortion out of it? I find mine always has too much "hair".
