Finally finished the refin on my Geddy clone. Dropped the Tom Brantley Geddy pups in it. Sanded it down past the sealer. Wet sanded a bunch of coats of thinned BLO with 1500. Then used the Stew Mac aged clear nitro. I love it! Been playing the crap out of it.
It’s pretty simple, but not something I had the resources to make. The only mod I had to make was screwing a heavier piece of plywood to the base because the base he used wasn’t thick enough. He doesn’t know anything about what bass bodies generally weigh, but other than that, it was perfect.
Mount it to a swivel top barstool and you gain even more flexibility!
What is the most preferred rattlecan gold for best/easy results? Not interested in too much glitter.

Hopefully someone will have current use-advise, but straight gold (as straight silver) is going to be the most tricky DIY rc paint to get good results.
Really depends on how much metallic flake you’re looking for. Covering heavy flake with rattle can clear is near impossible.

Probably look for a non-metallic gold if that is the case.

Krylon Fusion has some metallics that are easy to spray and clear coat. I did this one in their metallic rose gold that came out well. If you zoom in you can see some flake.
Keeping with the same brand is always a good idea. I used it on my daughters build and it polished up very nicely. It’s rustoleum color shift with rust oleum lacquer clear.

You spray a base colour preferably transparent. Then put a mask on the body raised up with blocks about 20mm and spray the next colour at an angle of approx 45deg so that some over spray goes under the mask.
Then another mask a bit bigger to do the final colour ( a very dark brown looks better than black)
Then you can spray the whole lot with clear lacquer.
I know a professional car body sprayer (whose won prizes at car shows) He does it with an air brush in 2k poly and a low bake oven.
Haha, yeah. I make all my basses. She used my 62 P bass clone all through high school then she wanted me to make her one. I told her to pick one and that was it. The color shift is pretty cool. It’s a matching headstock, the pic below shows the color shift. It’s also before the clear coat.
