Unless there is play in the pocket for the neck - like you I tape it off. I tape it to 1/16" from the top edges and then carefully file the overlap off using downstrokes only.

With the bass stripped to wood (sand paper), stained, sanded, primed, color coated, and cleared, I’m getting excited. I will wet sand and polish this weekend.
74 AVRI Jazz body, originally black poly. It had a couple dings that I tried to repair. That didn’t work. Wasn’t overly happy with the natural approach.
Now it’s duplicolor Bahama Blue over white primer and a bit of Olympic white.

It appears I have a bit of extra color coat on the upper horn (appears darker). Hmmm. Any suggestions?
Also it is interesting how this color appears here vs old Cadillacs in Bahama Blue - could this be due to the white primer used vs duplicolor gray primer expected?
I must say that is a beeeeeautiful color....Love the primer and the Bare wood finish...
If you happen to sand through any parts of the Blue...it will still look lovely.
Now to get a nice glassy smooth finish in the blue.
How will you do that?
My initial plan is to lightly wet sand at 2000 grit then hand polish with 3M’s ultimate compound.
In my experiance the primer color can make a difference in the final "shade" but very negligible if the primer coat was thorough AND the color coat was thoroughly applied. Not sure why there is a variation in the horn area. Maybe a very flat/smooth spot? I might give the cure a little extra time before clear see if it evens out, not sure if it will make any differrence though, anyone else?
I'm certainly no expert, but I did recently spray with that same color paint. That spot on the horn could be where perhaps the paint soaked into the wood a bit? Perhaps a quick light sand and re-spray ?

The blue is intense. I was aiming for a bit more of a gray blue vs a candy blue. That said, it is a very pretty color. I gave it a bit of 2000 and quickly decided that needed to wait. The temps are clearly too low - I haven’t got a lot of painting experience and even less great painting experience, but I could deduce that.
So, I somewhat irrationally decided to go ahead and build it, just to see what it might look like and so I could bring it in and hang it up inside out of the cold.
I have a black control plate at the moment, Lindy’s +5s with raised pole pieces, and a Flea road worn neck. I don’t know about that color. I just don’t know. Pardon the poorly framed shot...
I’d have to be in a darn good mood to play it. My thought is to let the finish sit for a few weeks or months,
Play it, let it get a little bit of wear, then give it a wet sand & polish. It may need a few more coats of clear (it has 4). I am aiming for a light relic anyway, given the perfect neck I found for it.
Your input is welcome. Highly critical input may be best if done in a PM LOL

It could be due to the lighting. And some colors are just hard to capture in photography.
Definitely let it sit and cure for a while. Perfection can't be rushed!

It's a nice blue - LPB? A shade more like you wanted may have been Pelham Blue - more of a medium/softer hue. I did a more extensive relic on it but it could be less so to your tastes.
Thanks Murphy! Yeah I picked up the raised pole PUs after trying to play the JB with a 62 P neck and selling my Jazz neck. Nope! Had to get a P Body.
So, then I had to find another neck for this Jazz Bass. That Flea neck just popped and after a bit of research, I just knew it was the right one for this project. In fact, finding that neck changed the trajectory for this build into a light relic.

Initially I was going to go for LPB, but reranch had been off line for a few days and I had read that the Bahama Blue was close. So I went with the duplicolor.
how in the heck did you get that faded effect. I like that.
