Well, in my opinion, sunburst finishes look better in gloss. Mostly because the black edges look darker black under a gloss shine.

But, of course, putting on a gloss finish is a lot more work. A gloss finish is 2-4 times the labor of a satin finish. I know the numbers, because I regularly do both. And I charge a few hundred more for gloss sunburst finish basses.

You apply many layers of clear coat. Once that dries, gentle wet sanding till the peel is gone.

The orange peal is in the clear. Wet sand 800 to 1200 grit and polish.

You still do a form of polishing. If I'm doing a semi-gloss or satin type finish I'll level sand up to 800 or 1000 grit then use 3M super duty polish to get it most of the way there then scrub the clear with grey and/or white ScotchBrite pads until it's at the level of semi-glossness I want.

I also use a metal polish to do gloss, it has a lower grit and gives better control before a scratch remover final polish.

Yes. It has low grit and doesn't leave many scratch marks. But I used it because it's what I had on hand and the bass body wasn't high value. We use the mothers mag to polish brass parts of our stove.
