My dog, 145# Anatolian Shepherd mix, was itchy, and gnawing her paws. Tried the raw diet, mixing it at home, several different supplements, the whole deal. We saw no improvement in he itchy-ness and just do high quality kibble with the occasional bone and other treats.

Sounds like a fungus. What does her vet say?

Thanks for the tip. We’re minding our grand dog now. A 13-year old Labradoodle. Picky eater with a easily upset stomach the last couple of days. I mixed in a tsp of yogurt with her morning kibble just now. We’ll see how she does.

doodles typically have stomach issues. it's pretty common. it's a part of why they get a bad reputation among pet professionals. If you can work around their food sensitivities, then they can live up to all the hype. I love them personally, and a well-bred labradoodle can be about as good of a family dog as anything.

often Kefir is more easily digested than yogurt - although plain green yogurt is a highly recommended meal topper.

I had a negative attitude to them for a long time, compounded by the preponderance of them around here on the UWS. I call the neighborhood Doodletown.

But this dog is a sweetheart. Now I know the pitfalls and have learned to appreciate that they’ve been bred purely for companionship as house dogs.

The vet’s solution is to put her on steroids to calm the itch, which it does. She still gnaws the paws. Not sure what to do? Maybe it’s normal?

I've got a pair of litter mate Anatolian Shepherds born Jan 2021... Best dogs ever! We use a vet that is also a livestock vet (I live in a rural / farming area) and had to switch up food as puppies because all the Premium foods have too much protein for a growing giant. I switched to regular Purina puppy and supplemented with cooked rice to reduce it further. The male's growth plates were out of wack and he was at risk of joint issues as an adult. These days I feed Pro Plan Shredded Chicken but also save meat scraps when trimming for dinner then every week or so I boil it up and add to some plain rice. Not in tune with the thread, but I got excited that there are more Anatolian Shepherds on here

Brutus is sensitive to something that grows here in late August through to October. My old Catahoula was sensitive to it too... haven't figured it out yet either. I give him benadryl in the evening on bad days.

Hi James,
Your Anatolians are awesome, such a 'natural' breed! TBH, mine isn't pure--she's got Irish Wolfhound, Pyrenees, and St. Bernard in her, she came from a farm outside Edmonton. Such a great companion, and soooo calm.

PS: We are both Arkham Sound fans. Some of your posts drove me to buy an Abyss that I pair with a Quilter BB800 for tone bliss!

We just got news our new Deutsche Drathaar puppy dropped on Friday! Her dam had a litter of eight. Four males and four females. We’re on the list for a female. Two months till we take her home. We’ll have a new house this spring on 25 acres for her to run her ass off. We are psyched.
