I am considering the platinum stage preamp. This would be with a Full Circle and HPF into an Aguilar TH 500. would the Fishman’s tone shaping abilities be a good match with that setup?

Thanks

I own this preamp and feel it is the bare minimum in the feature department. It's great if you just need something to boost your piezo signal before running to an amp or can be sent direct to house. But to me it doesn't have much in tonal shaping features compared to other more expensive units. Just IMO/IME..i think it's well priced and still useful in alot of situations, but i found myself wanting more and wishing i had gone a little farther to something like the Headway.

Honestly, I think this preamp is too much voiced from the start.
Better use something flat first.

Are you judging the original Platinum series preamp:
Invalid Link Removed

Or the new, completely redesigned preamp:

Because, with the first, I'm inclined to agree. On the second, not so much. :-)

I'm using a full circle through platinum pro eq pre (not the stage) and TH 500 with a Schroeder 1x12 cab. I bump the bass a tad on the pre and use a moderate amount of compression and get a very serviceable acoustic-sounding tone (probably nicer than the ply bass by itself).

I have been using a Platinum Stage preamp/di with my acoustic-electric bass ukulele (piezo pickup) for some time now and have been very pleased with the result. Lately I've also been trying it with a solid body bass guitar (single coil pickups), and so far it seems to work equally well in that situation. I also saw a few online user reviews indicating that others were using this preamp for electric bass, although the Fishman literature only mentions using it with acoustic instruments.

Is there any reason I should think that this is not a good idea? I.e., that I should use a preamp more specifically designed for bass guitar? I apologize if this has already been addressed elsewhere.

While I like preamps into powered bass speakers. I don't generally feel its's necessary to use a full featured preamp like

the Fishman Platinum Pro or the Platinum Stage, into a amplifier with a full preamp of it's own, especially as great as

the Aguilar TH 500. While their are things missing from the Aguillar mostly a HPF and Phase Reverse that can be

done with something like the FDeck HPF Buffer Preamp that's less expensive. Having two full sets of EQ that boost or

cut frequencies and have their own gain controls seems counter intuitive, redundant, complicated and potentialy

working against each other. Just my take of course. I know others work well with dual preamps.

None, whatsoever. If it sounds good, it is good. Let your ears be the judge.

Sorry, I should have mentioned also that the preamp feeds directly into a power amp (Baby Sumo) then into the speaker cab. No head as such is involved. And the bass guitar is passive. I agree about multiple preamps.

That's a perfect setup. A Fishman Platinum , with your Baby Sumo Power Amp is a win, win scenario. You can set the power amp back by the speaker and put the pre amp close to your fingers. The one thing you'll need to check is the output of the Fishman Platinum Stage, just to verify it

I liked the platinum stage so much I bought the pro. It’s great for fighting feedback and the tone is very natural sounding. My only bitch about it is the tuner is hard to see in the sunlight, but you don’t have to worry about that on the stage version.

I have the Platinum Pro pictured above from Mark’s post and I’d like to run my dynamic mic I’ve just mounted to my bass through the preamp. And from there straight to the PA. Is this a good idea? Is it workable? What is the best way to convert the mic cable into the 1/4 inch input and not degrade the quality of the mic?

Thanks,

For my mounted mic, which doesn't have a dedicated pre-amp, I use a simple female 3/4" to male XLR adapter, feeding directly into an Invalid Link Removed, feeding directly into my amp and it works well. Note, this is not required for an FOH, just for low impedance dynamic mics feeding into amps. I have used an older Fishman ProEQ2 for the same purpose and it also works well, but it's overkill since my amp also has plenty of EQ and other controls, plus with a pre-amp there is an extra 9v battery to worry about.
