I would just like to ask why. Do these people even know tonaly what the difference between a stand up and bass guitar are.
First off the stand up is a slow un responsive cumbersome instrument.
In all but a few genres it has no place. There is a reason the bass guitar was invented. A reason the bass guitar took over in all but a few places. The bass guitar is a better instrument.
So I say to these ads unless you play bluegrass or rockabilly or something else that a stand up bass make sense in forget it.
You don't see bassist posting ads that say bandmates wanted must churn your own butter and raise your own barns."

Well, I definitely wouldn't say that a bass guitar is a better instrument than an upright or double bass, just different. While a bass guitar is definitely more popular and immediately accessible with a majority of music genres today, an upright bass does have a certain tone and vibe to it that no bass guitar can touch...and they do have a certain image that maybe the poster of that ad wants for his band. I don't play upright bass (yet, saving for my first one) but do love how they sound in the hands of someone who knows how to play them. At the end of the day it's the bandleader's call on what they want in a bassist just the same as it's the bassist's call on what he/she wants to bring to a band.

Yup. There should be a Marshall Grant school of upright bass dance. He had some slick moves. He might have studied from that guy in the Reg Kehoe All Female Marimba Band.

There are many things that you can do on an electric that you can't on an upright.

Equally true, there are things that can be done on an upright, primarily that deep, organic tone, that can't be replicated by an electric.

Have been in the transition to a true doubler (again) since February this year. I find myself saying "I've never really played bass until I play upright".

I've seen ads for 5 String Bass Player and Upright Preferred. The band probably knows what they want, maybe they shouldn't be so specific.

In the end, the bassist should be relied upon to make the choices, or at least the suggestion.
