I just checked out the Chuck Sher site...

Now it looks like they're offering their own files...around $60 for 280 tunes.

I have "the disc" also and it's been a great tool. Too bad some of the scans are pretty bad...

I also own a pile of legal Real Books so I've been a good customer.

There's no way I could justify the near $1,000 including all the bells & whistles. But it's SO COOL!

Looks like the Sher stuff will compatible in that format. Too bad the songs don't cost 99cents like on iTunes! Heck, it's not like a commercial recording we can download and enjoy -- once we download the song we actually have to do the work of playing it!

What I really want is all those hip "Pocket Changes" on something like an iPhone!

I just ordered the 6th Edition, Volume 1 legal real book. Best deal I found was on Amazon, did not think of trying ebay.

Seems that the guys I have been rehearsing with were using that edition and I did not have some of the tunes. However, I did order the bass clef edition. I rarely have had conflict about having this in my years of playing and using the 5th edition bass clef. I sometimes pull it out for sighreading practice too and bass clef is better for that for me. I suppose if there are future problems, the price of getting another one in treble clef is small.

I really prefer the Sher books and wish they were more in common use.

Yeah the 6th edition has a different set of tunes than the mainstay 5th edition.

Yup. It's called "stealing". A student gave me a copy of "the disc" once, and it stays on my computer at school; I don't mind having it because I already own all of the legal books (and many of the illegal ones as well), and it's more of a convenience than anything. But for some fool to be SELLING somebody else's work on ebay...that's just plain ****ed up.

I'm no expert on this by any means, but weren't all the Real Books prior to the 6th edition essentially illegal compilations in the sense that copyright permission to the tunes was not obtained? I'm talking about these ones:

Real Book Volume 1
Real Book Volume 2
Real Book Volume 3
The Real Book 5th edition
Etc.

So the people who put those together in the first place were the original thieves... just pointing out that the pdf scans of those books are no worse than the hardcopies in terms of ripping off the artists. You are just ripping off the original thieves at the same time...

Please let me know if I'm mis-informed.
