Real Musicians don't make money.

Ya know, once in a while a guy ought to be allowed to feel like punching the lights out on some jerk. :blackeye:
:)

Ya know... I get it actually.

The way people affect me has a lot to do with the mood I'm in and where I'm at. Right now I have a lot of good things happening in my life, and a lot of really NOT good things that I have to learn to live and deal with (family health issues). In a space like this, a guy saying that to me would get a smile and a nod at most. And he'd be forgotten the second I looked away.

Catch me on different night, and yep. I can get as defensive as the next guy.

Feels good being in my current space though, even with the tough stuff.

he was just chatting with my (fairly drunk) wife about how he wouldn't degrade himself by playing covers.

I know numerous people who live quite near you who make their living playing originals. Not one of them would be such a wanker as to make a statement like that.

For the record this guy was going to bash me for being a sell-out.
I'm guessing he was pissed that his girlfriend did more dancing, and showed more enjoyment, to your gig than she does at his gigs.

I've developed a pretty keen sense of creepiness or aggression from other folks & it has saved my behind countless times.
I would have shut down that conversation pretty quickly.

but, keep up your guard, i.e., don't turn your back on him after you blank him

Ever had a guy try to give you a handshake, but was really going for the Glasgow Kiss?

.

You mean like Pete Murray, Toni Childs, Olivia Newton John, Andrew Stockdale, Jack Johnson, Tex Perkins, Grace Knight....yeah for a small country town it's not the sort of place you run your mouth about being a "real musician" or even hear people talk other musicians down.

He doesn't get paid? Hahaha - Good opportunity to break out the old classic:

What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?

Homeless.

You just know that dude talking smack is a straight-up suitcase pimp, and that exact same dancing girlfriend of his is bankrolling his entire existence. You've gotta love it. Suitcase pimpin' ain't easy.

If that guy came up to me on a cover band gig, I'd kindly agree with him that playing other people's music for money isn't the highest form of art, but I'm not here as an artist. I'm here as someone performing someone else's art as a tribute to their creativity and impact on the form. If he disagreed with the fact that I profited from that, well, I'd suggest that he take it up with management to ensure all licensing agreements were in place.

Since we're all positing "If I were there" :)

Well I can say as someone who was there......that response (which was mine) would lead to you working out how to get out of the situation without throwing punches.

Even if I said it in a really nice way and offered to buy him a beer? :)
Chances are the drunk guy is looking for a fight. But he's still not drunk enough to be the guy to throw the first punch.
Smile, turn your back, walk away, even offer to buy him a drink, can still cause an irrational and potentially violent response.
You can't get anywhere being rational with an irrational person.
The only thing you can hope for is to be able to claim self-defense after "Drunk and Stupid" does take a poke at you.
