Really considering the Ampeg PF-20T

Oh, I graduated from what has been known for the past several days as Cal Poly Humboldt back when it was Humboldt State University. It was all an expensive and inefficient plot to get Schwarzenegger’s autograph :laugh:

I've had mine for 5-6 years now and will not try to talk you out of it :) . As a studio tool, it's fantastic. As you said, you can use the DI (actually there are two DI's that each sound a little different) without a load, which is awesome for recording. And you can crank that thing up too, for jamming or mic'd recording. The only thing to be realistic about is how much it can do live. With the right band and/or sound reinforcement it can definitely hang and sound great. But it might not be enough in certain live band situations. Besides that, no downsides IMO. Takes pedals really well and sounds great on guitar too.

No....I've had hum but it turned out to be the bass not the amp. With my boogie 400+ when hum has grown it turned out to be a tube problem. That's why I love the pf, there are just a few tubes and it has a bias control so I don't have to take it to a shop. My boogie has 16 tubes and weights a ton. The PF also has superior XLR outs to go to the house at gigs.

Sadly. No. Designed in the usa, made in china. I was reading that only the ampeg heritage models remain made in the usa. But i am no ampeg pro.

But it is a solid unit… and imho i would not let made in china scare you.

If you want to go this route, I would get the PF-50T. Even with 50 watts, you are fairly limited to low volume, intimate acoustic live gigs while there's practically nothing outside of the studio that you can do with 20 watts.

Warm and round yes… distortion no. And i even pushed it hard. I got a small amount of grit once. I am sure i could have boosted my input signal more… but that was my hottest active bass and a pedal… so i took the hint and decided the amp was not made for dirty tones.

for many this is a positive thing. Lots of useable volume in a small amp.

Yeah mine doesn't overdrive barely at all either, not on its own. But it responds really well to various dirt pedals.

For what it's worth, here's an example of a guitar being put through the 20t with a drive pedal.

My first gig with it while loading it took a tumble off a full stack. It hit the concrete and bounced. Bent one of the transformers, roughed up a corner, and made a scary sound. No internal damage. Made in china but it is still built like a tank. :)
