Really considering the Ampeg PF-20T

I was not saying that overdriven PF-20T sounds the same as overdriven V4B or SVT CL.

The issue was whether it's possible to get overdrive from PF-20T. I stand by my post: it is possible - I have been doing it regularly. Whether one likes the sound of overdriven PF-20T is a matter of personal taste.

Btw:
  • the number of gigs where I could use overdriven V4B is 1-2 per year,
  • the number of gigs where I could use overdriven SVT CL is 0 per year.
As you can see, neither V4B nor SVT CL is an option for me as a source of overdriven tube amp sound.

On the other hand, I can use overdriven PF-20T at any of my gigs.

Not denying that, but you can still use at least V4B for overdrive on "quieter" gigs, you just need to attenuate the volume with an insensitive speaker cab. CL is a bit difficult to tame for smaller gigs, I agree.

I'm thinking about trading a Mesa Subway 12" cab for the PF-20T. I already have a 15" Subway. Prices on Subway cabs appear to be pretty high right now. I'm just spitballing now. As much as I like the aesthetic of my "mini fridge of Doom", I feel the need to downsize a little bit.

After a few days to think on it, no I'm not getting rid of my Subway 12". I don't need it, I want it. Don't want seller "rahgurt".

Just got one five days ago, amazed with the volume going into a 2x12 barefaced 4ohm cab,but bought it to use as a preamp/ DI box going into a pretty big PA. Was concerned about noise but it’s not an issue. The sound is everything I hoped for, big, fat and responsive. Hardly have to touch the tone controls. Doing everything from ballroom stuff to modern and backing acts. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
This is about the Ampeg Pf 20t to avoid confusion

Hello Everyone!

Since I am considering to have pf20T in these days, I decided to ask few questions after reading a lot about PF20T/50T here on TB. I am a beginner so, my questions might be challing or can sound nonsense, already sorry about it.

First concern of mine is about pf series reliability. I watched a lot of youtube reviews or read posts here that people had issues with pf series in general. Even some ampeg people mentioned that they cannot deny the issues of pf series (during the launch of new ventura series I guess) So, how is the reputation of pf20t in terms of technical quaility and reliability?

My second question would be about the sound. Unfortunetly, I do not have an opportunity to test it before I purchase. Many people say 20t is closer to B15 and 50t is more like VB4. In my case I need small amp for home practice and recording (I will run it with Aguilar db115) since I am not going to have gig soon. However, that would be nice to have something sound similar to b15 which I really like. To elaborate, I will copy a link for a youtube video here. First 10-13 sec is the sound I am in love with. Would pf20t can get any closer that? Apoligies once again since I do not have enough terminological words to explain what I am looking for. Would be glad to hear from you people, thank you already.

You should be able to get in the ballpark, sure, but a lot also depends on the bass, strings, and your playing style (which accounts for the vast majority). Garth is a cool dude. Nice to see this vid again.

My bass is Fender CS58 Precision with Dunlop flats on it.

Due to crazy amount of custom taxes, whatever you buy here (my country Turkey) is three times more than original price. For example, $600 cost Markbass 112 cab costs here almost $2000. That is why I bought expensive guitar during my studies abroad even I am absolute beginner. Because I know which sound I like, yet I do not know if I am going to be able to buy that kind of bass later if I would start with beginner line basses. Same thing with amps as well. That is why I can only answer first part of your question, which is bass and strings.

Desperetly I am trying to have some projection on anything I will buy, so there will be less amount of loss if I cannot have the result I predicted. For 20t I have good deal in these days. That is why I am trying to find people who use or used 20t and achived to get that kind of sound out of it. Thanks for your input. I already read a lot of post of yours related with pf20t and 50 and they were all helpfull.
