Reasonable custom pickguards?

I have a project bass - it's a Steinberger Spirit XP-25, the all wood neckthrough mini V, not the more common Spirit XT-25.

I am working on replacing all the original electronics - the current two pickups, V-V-T pots and PG mounted jack will be removed and replaced with a single passive EMG 35HZ soapbar in the neck position, better quality volume and tone pots and a decent jack. I'm trying to turn it into a simple passive travel bass.

I want to have a new pickguard made for the single pickup and the reduced control set. I don't have a router available to me, plus I think making a pickguard with a precisely placed hole for the pickup is a little beyond me without a lot of trial and error. Material will be either thick single ply black or possibly black/red/black, nothing special. I have the original pickguard that can be used as a template.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a custom pickguard maker that won't break the bank?

I did find one maker that shows Steinberger pickguards - Pickguard Planet. Anyone have experience with them?

Custom, cheap and uncommon bass - your options are not that large. Try contacting Pickguardian and see what they might have. I have had good experience with them.

Another option is to try a local wood shop or craft center. There may be people who work with routers and other tools if you have an original guard to use as a template

Idoubt they would cut you a guard, but warmoth is the only place i've ever seen a black/red/black guard offered. You might however get them to sell you a piece of stock if you have your heart set on that color combo. I've got one for a j bass but have never mounted it. I got it for a project that failed to get far before the bass sold.

I've looked briefly at their process. Basically you give them a tracing of what you want, and they make it. So i guess if it doesn't fit, it's probably the user's fault lol

Don't know about the custom stuff but the 5 stock guards I've got from them all fit well. In fairness they have all been for MIM J basses so I can say they seem to have that particular bass covered.
